Analysis of the root oil ofFokienia hodginsii (Dunn) Henry et Thomas (Cupressaceae) by GC, GC–MS and13C-NMR

Abstract: The root oil of Fokienia hodginsii from Vietnam was submitted, after fractionation over silica gel, to a combined analysis by GC-RI, GC-MS and 13 C-NMR. Forty hydrocarbons and 19 oxygenated compounds, mostly sesquiterpenes, were identified. (E)-Nerolidol and fokienol were the major components.

“…In the case of F. hodginsii chemical exudates from the adult trees may also support the survival of juveniles near mature trees. Several studies indicated that the essential oils of F. hodginsii are rich in sesquiterpenes with strong defence mechanisms against mosquitoes and other insects (Lesueur et al 2006;Paluch 2009). However, only a limited number of previous studies did examine the spatial distribution of regenerating F. hodginsii trees.…”

“…In our study area, the restoration zone was disturbed by previous shifting cultivation, so it is evident that Q. platycalyx is able to colonize disturbed sites. Q. platycalyx is likely to be one of the species occupying early successional habitats and has good regeneration after coppicing (Nguyen et al 1996;Le and Le 2000).…”

“…Therefore, we believed that, in combination with phenotypic and genetic parameters, the chemical composition of EO isolated from various parts of the tree could bring useful information about the species of the pine growing wild in Son La Province, Vietnam. In continuation of our work on the characterization of Vietnamese conifers (Cupressus tonkinensis, Fokienia hodginsii, Xanthocyparis vietnamensis) through the composition of their EOs [10][11][12] the aim of the present paper was to get more insight on the composition of EOs isolated from various organs of the recently discovered Pinus cernua (P. armandi subsp. xuannhaensis): needle oil, cone oil, and branch oil.…”
