Analysis of the Relapse Rates of the Primary Closure and Limberg Flap Techniques in Pilonidal Sinus Surgery

Abstract: Background This study aimed to assess the relapse rates at the long-term follow-up of the Limberg flap repair (LFR) and primary closure (PC) methods in the surgical treatment of pilonidal sinus disease (PSD). Methods The records of primary PSDs who underwent LFR and PC due to PSD were retrospectively examined. The study included patients whose surgical intervention was performed at least two years ago. The patients were contacted by phone to obtain information. They were asked whether they had a relapse or not… Show more

“…Males are twice more affected as females and the incidence of the disease is reported as 26 per 100,000 population [2]. Several surgical interventions are described in the literature despite conservative management, but the problem of treatment failure and disease recurrence is quite significant, which leads to morbidity in these otherwise healthy patients and hence interventions have variable success rates [3,4]. As compared to simple excision, primary closure is the preferred technique as it is associated with a lower risk of postoperative infection and wound dehiscence, rapid healing by primary intention, and less number of postoperative visits, less pain, and earlier hospital discharge, and social mobility [5].…”

“…2 Es una enfermedad con una frecuencia aproximada de 26 por cada 100.000 habitantes, la relación hombre-mujer es de 2: 1,3,4 aunque en algunas series puede ser de 3:1 o 5:1. 5 Se presenta con mayor frecuencia entre los 15 a los 30 años de edad. 6 Existen dos teorías sobre su formación fisiopatológica.…”
