Analysis of the Potential for Renewable Utilization in Kosovo Power Sector

Abstract: The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and the decarbonization of the power sector through the utilization of available renewable technologies are challenging issues that Kosovo has to tackle right now, in order to fight the high pollution caused by a coal-based power system. Around 91.43% of installed capacities for electricity generation in Kosovo are based on coal-fired power plants. The aim of this paper is to show the potential for renewable utilization, using data measurements of wind, solar irradiati… Show more

“…The hydropower plant is implemented in a run-of-the-river setting, due to the high fluctuation of water flow rates, which makes rivers in Kosovo not suitable for other means of hydropower plants installments [4], [8], [27]. Three scenarios were compared where each of the scenarios represents a different order of the operating turbines based on their design flow rate.…”

“…Coal remains to have a major significance for Kosovo as it provides direct and indirect employment for thousands of people in the coal mining and electricity generation industry. Even though Kosovo is wealthy with energy sources, electricity production is provided by imported fossil fuels, especially during the winter season [18].…”

“…To design a system for the use of solar energy it is necessary to know a series of climatic parameters which include: The average daily radiation in solar collector planes, which is used to calculate the collector efficiency and solar energy absorbed by it; Sky temperature, which is important to know for calculating the energy calculated by the solar collector, Cold water temperature which is necessary to know to calculate the total thermal load which must be covered by the solar system [20]. The amount of solar radiation that reaches each point of the Earth's surface varies depending on these factors [21]: (i) the time during the day, (ii) season; geographical position, and (iii) geographical location and local climate conditions.…”
