Analysis of the performance of a non-coherent large scale SIMO system based on M-DPSK under Rician fading

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper we extend the analysis of the performance of a non-coherent large-scale single input multiple output (LS-SIMO) uplink system based on M-DPSK to consider Rician-K fading channel conditions. The interference is analyzed for a generalized K−factor and we provide analytical expressions of the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) for a single user. We demonstrate that for Rician fading our proposed system is independent of the channel statistics, which simplifies the receiver design… Show more

“…That is, using a design based on DPSK constellation the statistics of the channel do not need to be known. Furthermore, in [16] a gain with respect to other works that also consider Rician channel was shown both for different numbers of required antennas and spectral efficiency.…”

“…Our previous designs [11] achieved a good performance with a reasonable number of antennas required in Rayleigh fading. When we have Rician channel, our designs remain valid in single user systems [16], but they are not applicable when we have a multi-user system due to the new IUI terms introduced by the LOS component, as we will show next.…”

“…Tactical scenarios requiring a rapid response to threats, including a NP in the tactical radio help improve situational awareness. In addition to the emerging technologies mentioned above, it should also be noted that advances in massive MIMO are making possible the incorporation of Non-Coherent communications [9], [10], [12], [13]. This type of communication is based on the ability to demodulate signals without the need for channel estimation.…”

“…Most research has been focused on the constellation design to multiplex and non coherently detect several users. The designs based on Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) [2], [3] have shown a better performance against the ones based on energy detection [4], [5]. Channel coding schemes are introduced in both designs to reduce the number of antennas for practical systems.…”
