Analysis of the performance of closely spaced low-cost multi-GNSS receivers

Abstract: The recent advances of low-cost GNSS receivers have broadened their application field not only in positioning and navigation, but also in deformation monitoring of civil engineering structures and geohazards. Even though some consumer-grade low-cost GNSS receivers can achieve cm-level accuracy, their lower performance compared to the dual-frequency high-end GNSS receivers restricts its systematic application of GNSS technology in monitoring projects. In this study, the noise level and performance of the low-co… Show more

“…The hypothesis that the multipath effect is mainly responsible for the poor performance of low-cost receiver positioning may be verified by an analysis of day-by-day repeatability of the residual time series. It is evident that the multipath effect and antenna phase-center variation error exhibit repeatability since the same measuring environment is provided each sidereal day by the repetition of GPS orbits (Xue et al 2021). Indeed, a consistency between the low-frequency components of the residuals of consecutive days for the low-cost receivers that are given in Fig.…”

“…Furthermore, in this study, only the addition of GLONASS was examined due to the limited availability of Galileo and BeiDou at the time or the location of the recording, respectively. However, this methodology can be applied for the monitoring of any civil engineering structure, and it is expected that the addition of the satellite systems apart GPS will broaden the options of the multi‐GNSS solutions, especially with the development of the low‐cost multi‐GNSS receivers, 58 and enhance the estimation of the structure response even further, especially for unfavourable monitoring locations and time periods of poor GPS solution.…”

“…To check the performance of the ANN-MB-00 antenna in multipath reduction, measurements were additionally performed with a professional surveying antenna Leica AS10, which was applied in another similar test [ 14 , 30 ]. This uses, among other things, NovAtel’s advanced Pinwheel technology [ 31 ] ( Figure 1 b), which, as will be shown later, helped to obtain better results.…”
