Background/Aims Maxillofacial soft tissue injuries (STIs) may differ in epidemiological characteristics from other maxillofacial injuries. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of maxillofacial STIs in a public oral emergency department in Beijing, China, from 2017 to 2018. Material and Methods In this retrospective study, 5949 patients with maxillofacial STIs and complete medical records were evaluated. Gender, age, etiology, visit date and time, interval between accident and treatment, anatomic injury site, treatment modality, and the number of associated maxillofacial bone fractures or tooth injuries were analyzed. Result There were 3831 males and 2118 females (ratio 1.81:1). Patients younger than 10 years were the most frequently seen group (44.2%). Among adults, 20‐ to 29‐years‐old (16.2%) was the most prominent age group. The month of May (11.8%) had the highest incidence of maxillofacial STIs, and February (4.5%) had the lowest incidence. The average number of daily visits was significantly higher on holidays than on workdays. Of the 5949 patients, 45.9% attended at night, 2021 patients had dental trauma, and 31 had jaw fractures. The lips were the most common site of STIs, followed by the chin and gingiva. Lip and gingival STIs were more common in the 0‐ to 10‐years‐old group. Chin STIs were more common in the 20‐ to 39‐years‐old group. A fall was the leading cause of injury, especially in patients younger than 10 years and older than 70 years. Approximately 56.7% of the falls resulted in injuries to the lower one‐third of the face. Sports injuries were more common among 10‐ to 29‐years‐old individuals. Conclusion STIs of the maxillofacial region were most likely to occur at night, in May and during holidays. Males, children younger than 10 years and 20‐ to 29‐years‐old adults were high‐risk populations. Most maxillofacial STIs involved the lips, and one‐third of the patients had dental trauma.

Objectives To investigate the prevalence and severity of maxillofacial fractures resulting from motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) at King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study of 325 males (89%) and 47 females (9%) was conducted that retrospectively reviewed records of patients referred to oral and maxillofacial surgery department from emergency department from 1st January 2016 to 31st December 2017 at KAMC, Riyadh. Results A total of 372 subjects were included in the study. MVAs (80%) were the most prevalent cause of trauma. The age range most susceptible to MVAs was between 20 and 24 years old (28%). The most common site of fracture was the midface (64%), specifically orbit (32%). For mandibular fractures, the subcondylar was the most common site of fractures (19%). The most common treatment approach was conservative (65%). In terms of severity, approximately half of patients needed admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) (50%); the mean score on the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was 11.34, but most scores fell in the mild range; and (68%) of subjects presented with other associated systemic injuries, especially orthopedic injuries (36%). Conclusions MVAs were the main cause of trauma and affected mainly young males. The most common site of fracture was midface, specifically orbit. Subcondylar was the most prevalent fracture site for mandibular fractures. The severity of MVAs injuries was significantly higher compared to non-MVAs injuries. We suggest enforcing legislation and regulations on road safety such as the use of compulsory seat belts.

The article represents the results of data analytical processing considering the equivalent for dental treatment cost estimation among victims of traffic accidents with dental and maxillofacial injuries, and analyzes the objective association level of this criterion with the parameters of the approaches used for expert assessment of maxillofacial trauma injuries. Objective of the study is to analyze the equivalent for dental treatment cost values among victims of traffic accidents with dental and maxillofacial trauma injuries, and to establish an objective level of associations of this criterion with the parameters of the approaches used for expert assessment of maxillofacial trauma injuries. The design of the work included analytical processing of data obtained from previously conducted studies of retrospective and prospective nature, related to the economic component of patients’ rehabilitation due to the maxillofacial injuries occurred after road traffic accidents. The studied parameters were: the cost of treatment, duration of hospitalization, the criterion used to assess traumatic injuries of the maxillofacial region, correlation values relating trauma characteristics with the final cost of treatment and duration of hospitalization, statistical reliability of the relationships between the studied indicators of previously conducted research. Research methods: analytical, prognostic assessment, regression analysis. Current approaches used for expert severity assessment of the maxillofacial trauma injuries occurred after road accidents characterized by limited opportunities to predict and stratify the costs associated with the necessary future dental treatment of victims, but provide a sufficient level of objectification of functional and structural disorders. The increase of the expert severity assessment criteria of maxillofacial trauma injuries, in particular FISS and MFISS scores, is associated with an increase in the cost of appropriate comprehensive treatment and the potentially required duration of hospitalization, but these associations are characterized by uneven patterns of statistical dependences, and an increase in FISS and MFISS indicators beyond certain limit levels provokes a sharp advance in the cost of treatment due to the need for a longer hospitalization of the patient.
