Analysis of the pattern and intensity of urban activities through aggregate cellphone usage

Abstract: This study applies passive mobile positioning data such as Call Volume, Handover, and Erlang to detect the spatiotemporal distributions of urban activities. We obtained hourly aggregated cellphone data from a dataset of communications in Lisbon, Portugal. Fuzzy c-mean clustering algorithm was applied to the cellphone data to create clusters of locations with similar features in two aspects of activities: the pattern and intensity of urban activities along the hours of a day.In order to validate those clusters … Show more

“…The line extended to Bignona passes through Gambia, where the Trans-Gambia ferry service is included, and thus a bridge is suggested to be built to replace that ferry service. The connection between Tivaouane (7) and Bambey (10) and the connection between Fatick (12) and Foundiougne (13) are found as the most important regional roads for the accessibility in the country; therefore, they are suggested to be upgraded to national roads. Moreover, a link is suggested to be added between Thies (5) and Mbour (6).…”

“…Previous studies on the dynamic patterns of urban mobility included urban planning and morphology, urban clusters and spread, and urban rhythms (Demissie, Correia, & Bento, ; Kang, Ma, Tong, & Liu, ; Sagl, Delmelle, & Delmelle, ; Xu et al, ; Yuan & Raubal, ). Particularly relevant for our study in the context of urban mobility patterns were the contributions made by Yuan and Raubal ().…”

“…The FCM algorithm is chosen because it introduces fuzzy partitioning and membership degree theory in clustering, which allows the unclassified area to simultaneously belong to different land use types [61]. At the same time, the FCM algorithm has a solid theoretical foundation and broad applications [62][63][64].…”
