Analysis of the need for soil moisture, salinity and temperature sensing in agriculture: a case study in Poland

Abstract: Efficient use of scarce water resources is both a marketing objective and an environmental obligation for sustainable agriculture. In modern agricultural production, which is intensive and should at the same time be environmentally friendly, there is a need to monitor soil moisture, salinity and temperature. The aim of the study was to determine the demand of producers of agricultural and horticultural plants for equipment and systems for monitoring soil properties at an individual farm level in regions with h… Show more

“…Agriculture, precision farming, and drought monitoring benefit from their usage. When deciding when and how much to irrigate, growers must monitor soil moisture [26]. This increases output, improves product quality, and reduces disease and irrigation costs.…”

“…Soil water content is one of the most important environmental variables, affecting plant growth and crop yield. In agriculture, accurate assessment of soil water content is important for making production decisions, adjusting the dates of respective treatments and processes, and for optimizing irrigation scheduling and its automation (Cepuder and Nolz 2007;Gałęzewski et al, 2021). Continuous monitoring of soil moisture in a soil profile may be especially beneficial in precision agriculture and in conditions requiring sustainable and efficient use of water resources.…”

“…Soil moisture that plays an important role in the soil-plant-atmosphere system is still not well implemented in the currently available CISs. Some studies have documented the importance of soil moisture on agricultural productivity e.g., [29][30][31][32]. They concluded that the assessment of soil moisture is crucial to understanding the variability of soil moisture and for optimizing crop production.…”
