Analysis of the mediating effect of mentalization on the relationship between attachment styles and emotion dysregulation

Abstract: The current study aims to explore the relationship between attachment styles, mentalization and emotion dysregulation. Moreover, the mediation effect of mentalization in the relationship between attachment and emotion dysregulation is analyzed. A sample composed of 607 participants taken from the Spanish general population completed the measures in a cross‐sectional designed study. The results show that secure attachment is negatively related to emotion dysregulation dimensions, whereas insecure attachment sty… Show more

“…Mentalizing appears to have a unique significant relationship with emotion dysregulation. On the one hand, a robust and balanced capacity to mentalize protects the individual from dysregulating experiences; on the other hand, dysregulation, in particular dysregulating stimulation of the attachment systems, can undermine the capacity to mentalize (Marszał & Jańczak, 2018 ; Parada‐Fernández et al, 2021 ). Contrary to the theoretical and empirical literature, mentalizing and trust variables did not emerge as having a significant relationship.…”

“…This potential correlation warrants further exploration in subsequent research. Moreover, given that a mediating effect of mentalization between attachment style and both emotion dysregulation [ 68 ] and psychopathology [ 69 ] has been demonstrated, future research should delve deeper into exploring the relationships between mentalization, attachment style, and internet-related addictions.…”

“…However, the employment of deactivating strategies may enable individuals to exclude distressing feelings associated with negative attachment experiences from awareness while still retaining the capacity to cognitively process their own and others’ mental states, given that distress levels are not excessively elevated [ 33 ]. There is consistent evidence showing that insecure attachment, specifically preoccupied and fearful attachment styles, are associated with increased failures in mentalizing [ 62 , 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 ].…”
