Introduction: Triglycerides (TG) represent 98 % of the vegetable oils composition. The evaluation of TG in pumpkin seed extracts is valuable to perceive effects caused by domestication. Objective: To compare the triglyceride profile of wild versus domesticated pumpkins by reversed-phase HPTLC. Materials and methods: Wild pumpkins (Cucurbita foetidissima Kunth and C. radicans Naudin) seeds were collected at mature stage at three sites of the Mexican Plateau and seeds of domesticated pumpkins (C. pepo L., C. moschata Duchesne, C. argyrosperma K. Koch) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were acquired. Ground seeds were Soxhlet extracted with hexane to obtain the lipids. From the neutral lipid extract, TG were separated on 20 x 10 HPTLC Silica Gel 60 glass plates. Unsaturated TG were used as reference. The bands, in different tracks, were analyzed with the free-to-use GelAnalyzer software. Results and discussion: The TG profile of both wild and domesticated pumpkin seed extract shows similarity among their most abundant bands. In both samples, TG 18:2/18:2/18:2 predominates. In wild pumpkins, TG 18:3/18:3/18:3 bands stand out. Domesticated pumpkins have lower TG with higher unsaturation chain, than wild species, which gives them a greater nutritional value. Conclusions: Wild pumpkin seeds show a characteristic profile of unsaturated TG. Chromatographic profiling and image analysis with GelAnalyzer led to the sample’s differentiation based on the bands found.

A B S T R A C TObjective: To evaluate the safety profile and antioxidant activity of fatty hydroxamic acid (FHA) from the seed oil of Cyperus esculentus (C. esculentus). Methods: FHA was synthesized from the seed oil of C. esculentus via a two-step reaction system. The FHA was later subjected to antioxidant activity test using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picyrl hydrazyl assay. Additionally, adult male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups of five rats each and were orally administered with FHA at 0, 5, 15 and 50 mg/kg for seven days. Clinical observations and serum biochemical parameters were assessed to monitor treatment-related adverse effects in the rats. Results: Fourier transform infrared spectra showed that FHA was synthesised from the seed oil of C. esculentus. The antioxidant property of FHA increased as the concentration reduced below 0.05 mg/mL. Result of oral administration of FHA revealed no adverse effect levels at the dose of 5 mg/kg/day. However, the adverse effects seen in rats receiving 15 mg/kg/day (the least observed adverse effect level) were significant increase in alkaline phosphatase activity, triglycerides, and creatinine levels. Moderate hyperalbuminemia and hypoalbuminemia resulted in an increased albumin/globulin ratio. These effects might be the result of a physiological response to exposure to a very high level of FHA which is not part of the normal diet, and are most likely not toxicologically relevant. Conclusions: C. esculentus has been presented as a potential source of feed stock for the synthesis of a relatively cheap and non toxic FHA which has antioxidant and free-radical scavenging activity.

Oil was extracted from the seed of Terminalia catappa and used to synthesize disodium salt of sulfosuccinate monoester using simple reaction mechanism. The disodium salt of sulfosuccinate monoester was applied as corrosion inhibitor of aluminum sheet in 1 M HCl via weight loss method. The adsorption was found to obey Langmuir isotherm. The results presented disodium salt of sulfosuccinate monoester as an efficient inhibitor of aluminum sheet corrosion in 1 M HCl.
