Analysis of the interaction between surface water and groundwater using gaseous tracers in a dynamic test at a riverbank filtration intake

Abstract: We discuss a study designed to elucidate the genesis and inflow conditions at riverbank filtration wells located on a mountain river. This article seeks to identify the most important drivers of spatio-temporal dynamics of water flow in the hyporheic exchange zone, in natural conditions and conditions disturbed by the water abstraction. In our study we try to contribute to further understanding the dynamics of groundwater mixing with river water in the hyporheic exchange zone. We focus on understanding river/a… Show more

“…The isotope age-dating techniques in NASWF are described in [3]. Similar techniques have been widely used in groundwater systems, not only as simple tracers but also to identify constituents in groundwater and surface-water/groundwater mixing characteristics [4,5]. Isotope age dating in NASWF does not identify sources but can be used for travel time comparisons with particle tracking.…”

“…Frei et al (2009) analyzed existing hydraulic connections related to the Cosumnes River, whose lower course represents an alluvial river/aquifer system with a deep water table, typical of semiarid and arid regions [19]. Kotowski et al (2023) studied the surface water/aquifer connection of mountain streams [20].…”
