Analysis of the influence of hormone replacement therapy on TNF-alpha serum levels in menopausal women

Abstract: Beneficial effects of HRT on bone tissue may be exerted through decreased concentration of TNF-α in serum. The use of HRT allows constant bone mineral density to be maintained, which leads to prevention of osteoporotic changes.

“…Anti-osteoporotic effects of other agents have also been shown related to decline in the circulating levels of TNF-a during therapy. [1131] The decline of the mean serum TNF-α levels from 12.04 ± 2.81 pg/ml at baseline to 2.35 ± 1.08 pg/ml at the end of the study was statistically significant. The effect suggests a decline in osteoclastogenesis and as a consequence, a putative stabilization of BMD or its increase.…”

“…[910] Decrease in the serum TNF-α levels in postmenopausal women during hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been reported. [11] HRT, till Women's Health Initiative (WHI) outcome in 2002, provided an excellent preventive and therapeutic modality for PMO. However, since then, a paradigm shift has occurred.…”
