BackgroundIn recent years, there has been an increased interest in the subjective quality of life (QoL) of patients with bronchial asthma. Patients diagnosed with asthma experience a number of problems with regard to everyday activities and functions, which adversely affects their health-related QoL.AimThe aim of this study is to analyze the sociodemographic factors affecting the QoL of patients with asthma.Patients and methodsThe study comprised of 100 patients (73 females and 27 males) aged 18–84 years (mean age 45.7 years) treated in the Department and Clinic of Internal Diseases, Geriatrics and Allergology, Wroclaw Medical University. All patients with asthma who met the inclusion criteria participated in the study. We used medical record analysis and two questionnaires: the asthma quality of life questionnaire (AQLQ) and the asthma control test. Up-to-date sociodemographic data were collected from all participants, including sex, age, marital status, education, and sources of income.ResultsThe sociodemographic variables that correlated positively with QoL in all domains of the AQLQ were professional activity and higher education level of respondents. Factors that negatively influenced the AQLQ domains were older age and lack of professional activity.ConclusionThis study shows that age, physical work, and lack of professional activity decreased the QoL in this patient group. It was found that higher education contributes to better QoL scores.

Objectives: The present study aimed to explore the factors associated to asthma and HRQoL of patients. Asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases implicate severe restrictions on physical, social and emotional aspects of the patients' life. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a patient derived measurement that defines the functional effects of illness and treatment, as perceived by the patient. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study comprised of 100 asthma patients sampled in the outpatient department of KPJ Seremban Specialist Hospital. Mini-Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (Mini-AQLQ) with two sections was used as instrument in this study. The first section comprises six (6) Sociodemographic questions and the second section comprises fifteen (15) questions of HRQoL covering four main domains such as emotional, activity, symptoms and environmental. Results: The sociodemographic factor that correlated positively with HRQoL in all domains of the AQLQ was the higher education level of patients. Factors that negatively influenced the entire AQLQ domain were the older age of the patients and lower occupation status. The most affected domain of AQLQ due to asthma is the emotional domain and the least affected domain is the activity domain. Conclusion: This study represents that age decreased the HRQoL of patients and concluded that higher education level contributes to better HRQoL scores and implies that higher education plays a pivotal role in HRQoL and we believe that it can be improve by reinforcing Health education.

ÖZGiriş: Çalışmada persistan astım tanısı ile izlenen çocuklarda ve adölesanlarda düzenli inhale steroid tedavisi sonrası Astımlı Çocuklarda Yaşam Kalite Ölçeği (ÇAYKÖ)'ndeki değişikliğin cinsiyete göre incelenmesini amaçladık. Gereç ve Yöntem:Persistan astım tanısı ile izlenen ancak düzenli inhale steroid tedavisi almayan 7-17 yaş arasındaki olgular alındı. Olguların sosyodemografik özellikleri kaydedildikten sonra solunum fonksiyon testi (SFT), astım kontrol testi (AKT) ve ÇAYKÖ uygulandı. Altı haftalık inhaler tedavi sonrası SFT, AKT ve ÇAYKÖ tekrarlandı. Cinsiyete göre SFT, AKT ve ÇAYKÖ skorları karşılaştırıldı.Bulgular: Çalışma 27'si (%43.5) kız toplam 62 olgu ile yapıldı. Kız olguların geliş ve tedavi sonrası SFT parametrelerinden %FEV1 ve FEV1/FVC oranı erkeklere göre istatistiksel olarak yüksek iken (p<0.05) ilk geliş ve düzenli tedavi sonrası kızların ÇAYKÖ skorlarından duygusal işlev skoru, faaliyet kısıtlaması skoru ve toplam skorunun erkeklere göre istatistiksel olarak düşük olduğu görüldü (p<0.01). AKT skoru ilk gelişte kız ve erkeklerde benzer iken, düzenli tedavi sonrası erkeklerde kızlara göre anlamlı olarak yüksek bulundu (p=0.025). Olguların astım nedeniyle yapmakta en çok zorlandığı faaliyetler sırasıyla; kızlarda koşma (%88.6), merdiven çıkma (%54.3) ve tepeye tırmanma (%22.9) iken erkeklerde bu sırayı koşma (%83.3), futbol (%73.8) ve merdiven çıkma (%28.6) aldı.Sonuç: Cinsiyet astım tanısı ile izlenen çocuklarda yaşam kalitesini etkilemektedir. Kızların hastalıklarına daha duygusal ve subjektif yaklaşmaları nedeniyle yaşam kalitesinin daha düşük olduğunu düşünmekteyiz. ABSTRACTObjective: The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of gender differences using the Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ) following daily inhaler corticosteroid therapy in children and adolescents with persistent asthma. Materials and Methods:Children between 7-17 years of age with a diagnosis of persistent asthma who were not on daily inhaler corticosteroid therapy were involved. At enrollment, sociodemographic and asthmatic characteristics were investigated and pulmonary function test (PFT), asthma control test (ACT) and PAQLQ were administered. Patients were reevaluated following six weeks of regular inhaler therapy and ACT, PAQLQ and PFT were repeated. The scores from these tests were compared by gender. Results:Out of 62 patients, 27 (43.5%) were female. Although the mean FEV1% and the mean FEV1/FVC ratios of PFT for girls both at enrollment and following 6 weeks of daily inhaler therapy were statistically higher than the ratios for boys, the mean symptom scores, and activity scores and total scores of PAQLQ were significantly lower in girls both at enrollment and following therapy. The mean ACT scores for girls and boys were similar at enrollment but were significantly higher in boys following daily inhaler therapy (p=0.025).
