Analysis of the Features Important for the Effectiveness of Physical Activity–Related Apps for Recreational Sports: Expert Panel Approach

Abstract: BackgroundA large number of people participate in individual or unorganized sports on a recreational level. Furthermore, many participants drop out because of injury or lowered motivation. Potentially, physical activity–related apps could motivate people during sport participation and help them to follow and maintain a healthy active lifestyle. It remains unclear what the quality of running, cycling, and walking apps is and how it can be assessed. Quality of these apps was defined as having a positive influenc… Show more

“…Studies have found that running-related technology such as sports watches and apps are widely used, and they get significant attention in research. However, consumer-available running apps and sports watches almost all use the one-size-fits-all principle and take little or no account of a runner's motives, drivers, or AIOs [6,32,63]. These insights suggest a need for a more differentiated approach that targets the distinct needs of specific types of runners [6,28].…”

“…These sports watches and apps have great potential, because they are affordable, accessible, have a large reach, and provide multi-function operation [26][27][28], but the literature shows that this kind of technology is often not used for prolonged times and user commitment is low [29][30][31]. Therefore, it is important to match the user's expectations of technology and close the gap between runners' expectations and actual experience with these devices [6,32,33]. In order to understand the needs of runners effectively and adequately, their attitudes, interests, and opinions (AIOs) should be established and understood.…”

“…However, the emotions of the user are related to the experience and long-term use of an app [43]. As various studies have already shown that gamification can positively influence motivation and behavioral change [26,33,51], negative emotions according to inappropriate gamification elements or app features should be avoided [43]. In addition, behavior patterns also depend on external factors [6].…”

“…In particular, smartphones have several advantages. They are widely used, are embedded in everyday life [6,7], and allow people to collect data anywhere, anytime [8]. Since most people already have a smartphone (up to 76% of adults) [9] and apps are relatively cheap, often even free of charge, apps are accessible for almost everyone.…”
