Analysis of the expression of heat‐shock protein 27 in patients with oral lichen planus

Abstract: The increased expression of Hsp27 in the basal layer observed during the OLP evolution and the less staining in the superficial layers in all cases of OLP suggest that hsp27 may have a role in the OLP pathogenesis.

“…Proposed activation/tolerance theories regarding dendritic cells-i.e., that stimulatory function is either enhanced by toll-like receptors on dendritic cells recognizing microbial products and upregulating costimulatory molecules (47) or that damage in other cells and production of molecules such as heat shock proteins act as "danger signals" (48) that activate dendritic cells-may also be true for epithelial cells (49)(50)(51)(52).…”

“…The cicatricial post‐lichen stage is permanent and does not respond to medical treatment. Its importance lies in the possibility of progressive malignant transformation during the preceding stages of OLP, which persists in the atrophic and fibrous mucosa . At this point, it is important to mention that there exists controversy regarding OLP malignant transformation probably due to variations in the diagnostic criteria and knowledge of the post‐lichen stage.…”

“…The main progressive changes occurring in CKD include the action of uraemic toxins, inflammation, increase in apoptosis and an impairment of immunity (Musial and Zwolinska, 2011), whereas in OLP, they consist, mainly, in epithelial atrophy, hyperkeratosis and fibrosis of the corium. In both diseases, there is an increased possibility for malignant transformation in the late stages (Stewart et al, 2009;Garcia-Garcia et al, 2012).…”
