Local, regional, and global processes affect deforestation and land-use changes in the Brazilian Amazon. Characteristics are: direct conversions from forest to pasture; regional processes of indirect land-use change, described by the conversion of pastures to cropland, which increases the demand for pastures elsewhere; and teleconnections, fueled by the global demands for soybeans as animal fodder. We modeled land-use changes for two scenarios Trend and Sustainable Development for a hot spot of land-use change along the BR-163 highway in Mato Grosso and Pará, Brazil. We investigated the differences between a coupled modeling approach, which incorporates indirect land-use change processes, and a noncoupled landuse model. We coupled the regional-scale LandSHIFT model, defined for Mato Grosso and Pará, with a subregional model, alucR, covering a selected corridor along the BR-163. The results indicated distinct land-use scenario outcomes from the coupled modeling approach and the subregional model quantification. We found the highest deforestation estimates returned from the subregional quantification of the Trend scenario. This originated from the strong local dynamics of past deforestation and landuse changes. Land-use changes exceeded the demands estimated at regional scale. We observed the lowest deforestation estimates at the subregional quantification of the Sustainable Development story line. We highlight that model coupling increased the representation of scenario outcomes at fine resolution while providing consistency across scales. However, distinct local dynamics were explicitly captured at subregional scale. The scenario result pinpoints the importance of policies to aim at the cattle ranching sector, to increase land tenure registration and enforcement of environmental laws.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to examine whether the coupling of a land-use change (LUC) model with a carbon-stock accounting approach and participatory procedures can be beneficial in a data-limited environment to derive implications for environmental management. Stakeholder-based LUC scenarios referring to different storylines of agricultural intensification and reforestation were simulated to explore their impact on above-ground carbon (AGC) for a period of twenty years . The watershed of Mae Sa Mai, Northern Thailand was used as a case study for this purpose. Coupled model simulations revealed that AGC stocks could be increased by up to 1.7 Gg C through expansion of forests or orchard areas. A loss of up to 0.4 Gg C would occur if vegetable production continue to expand at the expense of orchard and fallow areas. The coupled model approach was useful due to its moderate data demands, enabling the comparison of land-use types differing in AGC build-up rates and rotation times. The scenario analysis depicted clear differences in the occurrence of LUC hotspots, highlighting the importance of assessing the impact of potential future LUC pathways at the landscape level. The use of LUC scenarios based on local stakeholder scenarios offer a higher credibility for climate mitigation strategies but also underline the need to co-design policy frameworks that acknowledge the heterogeneity of stakeholder needs and environmental management frameworks.

Main global environment and ecological functions and structure affected by land use/cover changes (LUCC). Analysis of the dynamic LUCC can be very useful in biosphere reserves (BRs) management. The Land use and cover (LULC) spatio-temporal changes in the Arasbaran BR were classified (as Agricultural, Forest and Barren/Range lands), and compared with future spatial pattern (simulated using the CA-Markov model) to evaluate qualitative and quantitative changes of this BR LULC over time (1989, 2000 and 2013 with 2037). This analysis consisted of the whole area and also in respect to each of the zones within the Arasbaran BR (as a new approach to assess BR management quality). Based on this approach, the LUCC monitoring alongside the future simulation offers an early warning system that also shows us trends and consequences of the changes for the whole BR as well as for each zone (including the core zone) of BR separately. The results show a downward trend for forestland at the expense of increasing agricultural and barren/range land surface areas. Furthermore this loss of remnant forest vegetation is not only true for the whole BR (; including its buffer and transitional zones) but is happening within the core zone where it will probably continue more severely in the near future. The results demonstrate the priority need for more severe regulations regarding protection of this BR against LUCCs and for its valuable core zone forest LULC in particular.
