One of the technologies for utilizing waste into high-quality fuel is torrefaction. Torefaction of empty palm fruit bunches is a thermochemical process without the presence of oxygen by heating the biomass slowly and holding it for a certain time. Torrefaction degrades the hemicellulose content to optimize mass and energy yields. The purpose of this study was to design a temperature control system using a electrical heater on a rotary torrefaction reactor for Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (OPEFB) pellets. The validation temperature sensor has shown a coefficient of determination (R2) 0.9999 using the model coefficient y = 1.0029x + 0.4017. The performance results of the electric reactor control system for torrefaction show a temperature control accuracy of 85.77% at various setting points. The response of the temperature control system within 10 minutes can reach a temperature of 213°C and in the 13th minute it reaches 301.6°C. The stability of the tool produces good performance. The electric power consumption for 6 kg OPEFB pellets was 2.98 kWh at a cost of USD 0.33. The water content in the torrefaction pellets is 1-2%. The results of the hydrophobicity test showed that the torrefactive samples at temperatures above 200 °C did not change their physical form after immersion in water for 24 hours. These results indicate that the electric torrefaction reactor automatic has succeeded in increasing the caloric ratio of the material, resistance to water such as charcoal, but still has the characteristics and properties of biomass.

The planning of metering network infrastructure based on the concept of the Internet of Things primarily involves the choice of available radio technology. Then, regardless of the type and availability of power sources, energy conservation should be one of the main optimization criteria. For this reason, LPWANs operating in unlicensed ISM bands appear to be a suitable solution in urban environments due to their sub 1 GHz propagation properties. High signal penetration and coverage make them applicable in urban areas with buildings and various obstacles. Therefore, this article presents solutions developed to support the planning process of implementing a LoRaWAN network infrastructure aimed at monitoring and collecting electricity meter data in smart cities. To this end, an algorithm has been proposed to support the selection of the number of LoRaWAN gateways and their deployment, as well as the selection of transmission parameters at the measurement nodes with a particular focus on geographic data from real maps.

Smart System for Reducing Standby Energy Consumption in Residential Appliances

Residential consumption represents one of the most important percentages of total electricity consumption. A considerable number of household appliances consume energy even when they are not in operation, i.e., they are in the so-called standby state, thus producing additional costs, which become significant over time. In this context, one method to solve this problem is to develop a smart system capable of severing the power connection to devices in standby mode, thereby conserving energy and reducing the energy costs. The first step in the design of this system consists of the identification and accurate measurement of the standby state, which was carried out for three of the most common household appliances. Then, by using an ESP32 microcontroller, a system was designed to manage the operation of a relay module based on the current consumption of the connected equipment. Control over the system was achieved through a web application that works across all devices equipped with a web browser, offering functionalities to adjust current value time delays and to manually switch the system on or off. Finally, the deployment of this system across the three appliances studied led to a reduction in the energy consumption in standby mode of 26.68 kWh per month.
