Analysis of the ‘Dutch Disease’ Effect on the Selected Resource‐Rich ASEAN Economies

Abstract: This article examines the applicability of the Dutch Disease hypothesis by using a vector auto-regression model, focusing on the resource-rich and middle-income economies in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The empirical study found that the latecomers of Lao People's Democratic Republic and Myanmar seemed to suffer from the Dutch Disease over the sample period for 1970-2015; and the forerunners of Indonesia and Malaysia, on the other hand, appeared to have no Dutch Disease effect at least in the cu… Show more

As with other extractive industries, the large financial gains that may be generated by successful deep-seabed mining, if not handled carefully, could have negative effects on a state's economic status 75 . The risk of this 'resource curse' may be combated by sound revenue management, and an integrated resource management approach, grounded in transparent and non-discretionary policy and law, with The ISA is an intergovernmental agency created by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and whose structure includes the following organs: the Assembly, the Council, the Legal and Technical Commission, the Finance Committee, the Economic Planning Commission, The Enterprise, and the Secretariat.…”

“…The government was very sensitive in allocating the resource revenues to the investment projects as well as diversifying the sectors to improve the business environment and high-quality institutionalization. In their research, Taguchi and Soukvisan (2017) investigated the Dutch Disease effect on ASEAN countries. They concluded that while Indonesia experienced Dutch Disease effects in the period of 1970-1995, with its suitable macro policies, the country did not have such a bad experience in the 1995-2015 period that the other resource-rich developing countries had.…”
