Analysis of the diet of Daubenton’s batMyotis daubentonii in Ireland

Abstract: 2001. Analysis of the diet of Daubenton's bat Myotis daubentonii in Ireland. Acta Theriologica 46: 43-52.The diet of Daubenton's bat Myotis daubentonii (Kuhl, 1817), which takes prey by aerial hawking and from the surface of water, was investigated by analysis of faeces collected in summer at 7 roosts, all close to rivers in pastoral land, in three widely--separated districts in Ireland. Forty-seven categories of arthropod prey were identified; several were insect taxa found in and around water. Most categorie… Show more

“…The lowest number of injuries should occur in Daubenton’s bats, who most often hunt over open waters without vegetation, where there are few obstacles. Insects caught over water dominate in their diet [27, 28]. If necessary, Daubenton’s bats can change their feeding tactics, for example, they can collect their prey [29] or hunt in the forest and over wet meadows [30].…”

“…Despite their similar life history, the two species differ with respect to foraging strategy and activity pattern during the hibernation period. Daubenton's bats hunt above water, and there is no evidence for foraging during winter (Flavin, Biggane, Shiel, Smiddy, & Fairley, 2001;Kokurewicz, 2004;Siemers, Dietz, Nill, & Schnitzler, 2001). In contrast, Natterer's bats glean arthropods from surfaces (Andreas, Reiter, & Benda, 2012;Siemers, Kriner, Kaipf, Simon, & Greif, 2012;Siemers & Schnitzler, 2000) and radio-tracking data suggest that they feed during hibernation period (Hope et al, 2014).…”
