Analysis of the damage mechanisms in mixed-mode delamination of laminated composites using acoustic emission data clustering

Abstract: In this study, acoustic emission (AE) technique is used to investigate different time-to-failure mechanisms of delamination in glass/epoxy composite laminates. Woven and unidirectional layups were subjected to the double cantilever beam, end notch flexure, and mixed-mode bending tests and the generated AE signals were captured. Discrimination of the AE events, caused by different types of the damage mechanisms, was performed using wavelet packet transform (WPT) and fuzzy clustering method (FCM) associated with… Show more

“…The FCM is a data clustering method for any two-dimensional data. The dataset is clustered into a predefined number of clusters in FCM [19]. Unlike other data clustering methods, in which all the data points belong to only one cluster, in FCM, the data points belong to all the clusters to some degree.…”

“…The detailed procedure for performing FCM on a dataset can be found elsewhere. Both the PCA and FCM are popular data analysis methods and their procedures have been described in the literature over the years [17][18][19]. Hence, they are not provided here.…”

“…Furthermore, low interlaminar strength and the presence of damage/flaws in the material can be identified via the combination of the AE technique and wavelet analysis [20]. The fiber breakage, fiber stripping from the substrate or spalling, matrix cracking, and interfacial can be evaluated and analyzed using AE signals including the amplitude, count, rise time, duration, and energy [21,22,23,24,25]. The crack tip location during the fracture process can be identified using the AE signal source localization and cumulative AE energy [19,26,27].…”
