Analysis of the Current and Future Land Use/Land Cover Changes in Peri-Urban Areas of Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques

Abstract: A rapid increase in population and urban development has direct impacts on the natural environment of peri-urban areas of big cities, especially in the developing countries. This study examined land use and land cover changes (LULCC) of peri-urban areas of Kinondoni Municipality in Dar es Salaam city for the period between 1999 and 2019 and predicted future changes by 2039. The specific objectives were to; (i) map the spatial-temporal land use and cover changes (ii) analyze settlements (built-up areas) pattern… Show more

“…This component contains three methods for determining correlation among spatial variables: Pearson's correlation, Crammer's Coefficient, and Joint Information Uncertainty (Gismondi et al 2014). In this study, Pearson's correlation method was used to examine the correlation among spatial parameters because it provides information about the magnitude of the association as well as the direction of the relationship between spatial variables (Mnyali and Materu 2021).…”

“…Currently, the city's rapid urbanisation is putting strain on critical urban infrastructure and services, including health care, drinking water, housing, and roads (MCC, 2023). 1967, 1978, 1988, 2002, 2012 and 2022. However, despite the fact that numerous studies on land use and land cover changes in Tanzania have been conducted (Mnyali & Materu, 2021;Kitalika & Mlengule, 2021), in-depth research on changes in cities is still lacking. According to Mulugeta et al (2017) lack of spatial information is hampering effective economic and environmental planning due to ill-informed policy implementation.…”

“…This has resulted into poor access to urban infrastructure and services in several sectors. The rapid spatial expansion of cities due to increased population growth has resulted in the mushrooming of settlements in unplanned areas (Mnyali and Materu 2021). Incidentally, the fragile urban ecosystems attract the majority of urban dwellers due to their social and economic conditions.…”
