Analysis of the Compression Performance of Weft-knitted Spacer Fabrics for Protective Applications in View of the Surface Layer Structure

Abstract: In recent years, the use of spacer fabrics as cushioning materials in protective clothing and equipment has been highlighted. Thanks to the three-dimensional structure of spacer fabrics, they demonstrate special features. In addition to comfort requirements, the spacer fabrics exhibit good compressive characteristics and energy absorption, which are essential for human body protection against impacts. The cushioning performance of spacer fabric is highly dependent on the compression characteristics of the fabr… Show more

“…Also, this fabric exhibited inferior absorption coefficients above 2000 Hz and there was a fair agreement between the theoretical and the experimental data. [23][24][25] Asayesh and Amini 26 have studied the effects of fabric structure on the compression behavior of weft-knitted spacer fabrics, and fabricated fabrics with various knit patterns in the surface layer. The results demonstrated that the fabric's compression resistance can be improved by increasing the number of missed stitches in successive courses in the surface layer.…”

“…Changing the structure of the outer layers or spacer layer will affect the physical properties of spacer fabrics. [11][12][13][14][15][16] Different spacer layer structures have different cross-sectional shapes, such as rectangle (U shape), triangle (V shape), trapezoid, and so on. Abounaim and colleagues 17,18 were pioneers in the construction of simple U-shape WKSFs, introducing the knitting principles of flat and curved fabric.…”
