Analysis of the Combined Strengthening Effect of Solute Atoms and Precipitates on Creep of Aluminum Alloys

Abstract: The creep strengthening mechanisms in (age-hardenable) aluminum alloys are analyzed on the basis of a new microstructural study of powder samples, an analysis of a comprehensive revision of creep data from the literature, and a new modeling approach. A strategy based on the strength difference (SD) method to separate the contributions of solid solution atoms and precipitates to creep strengthening is proposed. The new methodology considers the combination of the two contributions avoiding the need of a thresho… Show more

“…The Si and Mg elements play great roles in AlSi10Mg alloy mechanical properties [ 34 ]. The presence of Si and Mg elements in the samples can lead to solid-solution strengthening, which has a great effect on the mechanical properties [ 35 ]. EDS spectrums showed there were more Si and Mg elements on the polished surface with the hatching space of 40 μm, which may enhance the solid-solution strengthening effect.…”

“…The two phenomena are coupled. The deformation slows down due to the presence of atoms in solid solution and coherent precipitates, and the precipitation kinetics is modified by the presence of the dislocation structure [32]. Figure 8 shows the structure of precipitates in aged AA2014.…”

“…In recent years, many scholars have studied the effects of aging on the precipitation kinetics [ 14 , 15 ], corrosion resistance [ 16 , 17 , 18 ], as well as some other mechanical properties of Al-Cu alloys [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ]. However, the corrosion performance of Al-Cu alloys still needs comprehensive investigation.…”
