Recently, experimentally Yersinia-induced arthritis in Lewis and SHR rats has been described as a potential animal model for analyzing the pathomechanism of reactive arthritis (Toivanen et al. 1986; Hill and Yu 1987). We could confirm that Lewis but not Fischer rats develop aseptic arthritis about 2 weeks after an intravenous inoculation of Yersinia enterocolitica, serotype 0:8 (Hill and Yu 1987). Moreover, we compared the antibody response to virulence-associated Yersinia antigens (Yops) of experimentally infected Lewis rats with that of Fischer rats using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblotting. The ELISA results revealed a more rapid and vigorous specific IgG, IgA and IgM response for Lewis rats than for Fischer rats in the early state of infection. As demonstrated by immunoblotting, the IgG response was directed predominantly against the plasmid-encoded YopM, YopH, YopD and the V-antigen during the acute phase followed by antibodies against YopE and YadA. Although both rat strains seroconverted against this set of antigens, IgG antibodies to YadA were more prevalent and of higher titer in arthritis-susceptible rats compared to arthritis-resistant rats.

ABSTRACT. To investigate the prevalence of antibodies to pathogenic Yersinia in breeding squirrel monkeys, the serum samples of 252 squirrel monkeys from 9 zoological gardens in Japan were tested by ELISA using plasmid-encoded Yersinia outer membrane protein (Yops) as the antigen. The cutoff value was calculated by using the serum samples of the squirrel monkeys from Suriname, where no prevalence of pathogenic Yersinia have been reported. According to the cutoff value, 164 of 252 (65.1%) squirrel monkeys were considered positive against pathogenic Yersinia. These positive monkeys belonged to 8 of the 9 zoological gardens, and the percentage of the seropositive monkeys ranged from 22.2 to 89.4%. Furthermore, in one zoological garden, the positive rate of the squirrel monkeys which were over 1 year old (95.7%) was significantly higher than those which were under 1 year old (23.3%). These results suggested that pathogenic Yersinia is highly prevalent among breeding monkeys in Japan.

Sera from 94 healthy Finnish and 100 healthy German blood donors were studied for Yersinia enterocolitica antibodies by two different techniques, enzyme immunoassay and immunoblotting, to compare the frequency of Yersinia infections in Finnish and German populations. The prevalence of Yersinia antibodies in Finland (19% and 31% by enzyme immunoassay and immunoblotting, respectively) and in Germany (33%, 43%) is relatively high and may indicate many subclinical Yersinia infections in healthy populations. Postinfectious complications, such as reactive arthritis, may follow also such subclinical infection; sensitive serological tests are important in their diagnosis.
