During the past decades the Italian rural landscape has undergone drastic alterations as a result of complex and contradictory transformation dynamics. This paper aims to investigate and evaluate these alterations in Sardinia, one of the most rural Italian regions. Land-use maps from different years were studied to identify the dominant rural landscape features of the region and the transformations they were subjected to over the course of time. The analysis investigates changes on three geographical scales: region, provinces, and "agrarian regions". An overall economic balance of landscape changes was calculated from the value ascribed to types of land use on the basis of the allowances (compensation for expropriation) provided by the local authorities (Provincial Commissions). This economic balance was considered in light of the regional policies which accompanied it. Results partially confirm the national and European general trend of loss of agricultural land when it is converted to new forms of exploitation. The analysis at different geographical scales has, in some cases, revealed data against the general trend, especially for some agricultural regions and for certain agricultural products. There is consistent with economic balance. This shows the need of a deep ex post evaluation of the effects of policies financed by regional and national community funds on the evolution of Sardinian landscapes.

The traditional Romanian village has recently seen unmistakable transformations. The import of architectural styles from EU countries and the need to modernise dwellings, combined with considerable legislative voids regarding the protection of the built-up heritage, have strongly modified traditional architecture and resulted in irremediable losses in terms of rural authenticity and landscape aesthetics. This study aims to analyse the need for preserving existing traditional architecture in Certeze village, which has been severely jeopardised by the import of post-modern elements. The perception of both locals and tourists on these aspects was evaluated using the survey method. Results outlined more conservative views from the older inhabitants who are still attached to traditional constructing styles, while younger respondents preferred the more modern houses. Most tourists also showed an increased interest in the traditional architecture and criticised the newer constructed buildings. The contrast between old and new, which at this point is ubiquitous in the area, remains an element of intergenerational negotiations and risks the diminishing of the cultural authenticity of Certeze even further.

In Apulia, minor rural buildings are normally affected by intense forms of abandonment and decay. These minor constructions are often reused in ways that are not in line with both their own characteristics and the territorial context that encloses them. These forms of deterioration often lead to disappearance of this heritage. This study is focused on the analysis of the minor rural building heritage and its relationship with the actual territory context of the Local Action Group Sud Est Barese (LAG SEB), made up of nine municipalities. The official cartography of Military Geographic Institute (IGM, 1:25 000), the Regional Technical Map (CTR, 1:5 000), the Informative Territorial System (SIT Puglia) database, and the Geographic Information System (GIS) software ArcMap ArcGis 10.5 were used in order to constitute the base cartography. To obtain information about localization of the rural buildings, IGM cartography has been used due to the greater number of contents related to the classification of buildings. Successively, the overlapping of IGM and CTR map data and the comparison of them with the digital orthophoto were useful to verify whether the buildings listed on IGM cartography still exist. All main territorial features were analyzed using datasets obtained from IGM, CTR and SIT Puglia databases. This work allowed to investigate the possible relationships between the typology and the distribution of minor rural buildings and the major territorial characteristics, such as land use, road network, orography, and karst formations. It was highlighted that, although all nine municipalities examined fall under the same LAG, these are very different from the point of view of territorial peculiarities and the use and enhancement of resources. Rural buildings in their territorial context near the coast show more diversified potentials, as these areas include different realities (urban centers, tourist and seasonal residential areas, production areas, etc.), while the innermost buildings are located in municipalities with a predominantly productive destination. The obtained results represent useful information to outline intervention policies, the implementation of which would serve to attempt to recover the building structures, or improve the quality and way of using them.
