Analysis of the behaviour of the users of a package of electronic journals in the field of chemistry

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this research is to analyse the behaviour of the users of a package of electronic journals using the data of consumption per IP address. Design/methodology/approach -The paper analyses the data of consumption at the University of Barcelona of 31 electronic journals of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 2003. Data of sessions, articles downloaded and abstracts viewed were analysed. Findings -Most of the consumption was concentrated at a few IP addresses, and most of the users made li… Show more

“…The popularity of abstracts -a type of content that is usually offered for free in publishers' platforms -is not surprising. An earlier study of the consumption of electronic journals of the American Chemical Society at the University of Barcelona (Borrego and Urbano, 2007b) had already shown their popularity and the usefulness of this variable for determining the number of regular users of a journal.…”

“…Some research has suggested a strong preference for electronic journals (Bar‐Ilan & Fink, 2005) although other work (Borrego & Urbano, 2007) found that chemists used a specific bundle of electronic journals less than expected. Barjak (2006) described heavy use of the Internet for scholarly communication across disciplines, particularly for scientists involved in large research networks.…”

“…Sadler and Given (2005, 2007) found that graduate students' understanding of the affordances offered by their academic library were limited, particularly with respect to the availability of professional help and opportunities for information literacy instruction. Borrego and Urbano (2007) studied chemistry professors' use of a suite of electronic journals and found less use than expected. Kurata and colleagues (2007) found that Japanese scientists use electronic journals heavily but not exclusively.…”

“…En Europa, fuera del Reino Unido, resultan reseñables los estudios de Gargiulo (2003) y Boukacem-Zeghmouri y Schöpfel (2008). Por último, en España apuntamos los trabajos de Borrego et al (2007), Borrego y Urbano (2007), Ollé y Borrego (2010), Rodríguez et al (2008), Rodríguez y Alvite (2011) y Rodríguez, Alvite y Barrionuevo (2012).…”
