Analysis of the application of ZrN coatings for the mitigation of the development of fretting wear processes at the surfaces of push fit joint elements

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to assess the influence of a ZrN coating on the development of fretting wear in a model of a wheel/axle push fit joint in a rail vehicle. The examinations of the fretting wear process in rail vehicle wheel sets were conducted on two groups of models consisting of a shaft and sleeve connected by means of a push-fit joint, in compliance with the rules for the representation of the real condition. Wear tests of a joint loaded with a vertical force were conducted on a fatigu… Show more

“…The results illustrated that the friction reduction was superior to wear resistance for lubricated Mg-Sn-Y/Steel contact under fretting conditions, mainly depending on the oil-film induced transformation of fretting running regime and transition of fretting wear (from adhesive/ oxidation wear and delamination under dry friction to abrasive wear and delamination under fluids lubrication). ZrN coating was applied to prevent fretting wear of a wheel/axle push fit joint in a rail vehicle [205]. Wear tests of a joint loaded with a vertical force were conducted on a fatigue testing machine permitting oscillatory tangential displacement, which is responsible for the development of fretting wear, and wear resistance of uncoated and coated shafts was compared.…”

“…The landfilled wastes containing organic fractions are the source of methane and carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere, which are referred to as so-called greenhouse gases. One of the solutions aiming to reduce such fugitive emissions is the construction of degassing installations, biogas intake facilities and its thermal neutralization in engines powered by landfill biogas in the combined electricity and heat generation system [15,16] Additionally, it is also possible to convert biogas to biomethane and use it to drive motor vehicles [17,18]. Having in mind the adverse impact of landfills, the key issue at the operational stage and after the closure of the landfill is to ensure environmental monitoring conducted by the operator.…”

“…For analyzing the effects of electrical discharge machining process parameters on performance factors, as well as developing empirical models, the RSM has been the most widely used technique in recent years [ 30 ]. It includes a set of mathematical and experimental techniques that require sufficient experimental data to analyze the problem and develop mathematical models that consider the dependencies of several input variables and the resulting factors [ 27 , 31 , 32 ]. This feature is important because the EDM process usually analyses the influence of several input factors (usually three, four or more), which can include: open circuit voltage, pulse-on-time, pulse-off-time, discharge current, duty cycle, working-fluid flushing pressure, electrode, electrode polarity, electrode material, and initial interelectrode gap [ 20 ].…”
