Analysis of the 3-Dimensional Fluid-Attenuated Inversion-Recovery (3D-FLAIR) Sequence in Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Abstract: Use of 3D-FLAIR MRI at 3 T may contribute to the elucidation of pathologic conditions in the inner ears of patients with ISSNHL and provide new radiologic indicators (mild hemorrhage, acute inflammation, presence or absence of BLB breakdown) that might assume the role of prognostic factors.

“…32,64 This contrast enhancement suggests the breakdown of the blood-labyrinthine barrier. 63 Prognosis for hearing was not good in ears with a high signal on precontrast 3D-FLAIR. 65,66 Inflammation A signal increase in the labyrinthine fluid on 3D-FLAIR in various inflammatory diseases such as acute meningitis, acute otitis media, Wegener's granulomatosis, 27 mumps deafness, 26 RamsayHunt syndrome, [67][68][69] and labyrinthine fistula by a cholesteatoma 70 has been reported.…”

“…32,63 An increased contrast enhancement of the labyrinthine fluid on 3D-FLAIR is sometimes observed in ears with sudden deafness after an intravenous administration of a gadolinium-based contrast material. 32,64 This contrast enhancement suggests the breakdown of the blood-labyrinthine barrier.…”

“…Sahin et al [Svrakic et al, 2012] found a high level of neutrophils, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and C-reactive protein in the patients with SSNHL. Berrettini et al [2013] provided imaging evidence for the involvement of inflammation in the inner ear among SSNHL patients through three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging (3D-FLAIR MRI). In addition, a series of inflammation related genes have been evaluated in SSNHL patients in previous articles.…”
