Recent years have witnessed successful developments of detection techniques of teraherz (THz) pulse radiation and its imaging applications such as security, medicine and environmental sensing, to name an important few. Progress of detection techniques has been made in many aspects, including detection sensitivity, real-time detection, roomtemperature operation, detection bandwidth and dynamic range, spatial (wavefront) and temporal proiles and so on. New detection techniques utilizing cuting-edge materials, sensors, systems and even novel detection mechanisms contribute to advances in teraherz pulse detection. While detection techniques continuously improve, teraherz pulsed imaging (TPI) also inds broad and intriguing applications. For instance, TPI has shown applications in nondestructive evaluation in pharmaceutics, biomedical characterization of tissues, medical diagnosis of cancers, identiication of explosive hazards and examination of art and archeology. The chapter highlights recent progress of teraherz pulse detection techniques and imaging applications.

Le rayonnement électromagnétique térahertz (THz) couvre un domaine de fréquence allant de 100 GHz à 10 THz, c'est-à-dire à la frontière entre les micro-ondes et les infrarouges lointains. De cette position résulte un certain nombre de propriétés optiques ou quasi-optiques (comme la lumière) et de modes de propagation/péné-tration proches de ceux des ondes électro magnétiques. Les applications de ce rayon nement dans le domaine biomédical ont vu le jour lorsque les mécanismes de pénétration et de diffusion ont pu être éclaircis [1,2] et utilisés pour différencier des milieux aux propriétés électromagnétiques différentes (conductivité, péné-tration) [3]. Plus récemment, le passage des spectroscopies THz aux technologies impliquant le domaine temporel (THz-TDS) marque une évolution cruciale vers une utilisation croissante de spectromètres miniaturisés ayant de nombreuses applications « de terrain », en particulier dans le domaine médico-légal pour la détection de drogues illicites [4]. Après avoir rappelé les bases physiques des modes d'interaction des ondes THz avec la matière puis les différentes applications de ces rayonnements dans le domaine de la santé, nous évoquerons de possibles réserves d'ordre sanitaire à l'utilisation régulière de ces nouvelles technologies. Rappels : les interactions THz-matièreDe manière générale, l'interaction entre une onde élec-tromagnétique et la matière peut se définir soit au niveau corpusculaire (atomique ou moléculaire), soit par la mise en jeu des phénomènes collectifs dans un maté-riau ou un tissu. Pour qu'il y ait interaction et qu'elle soit enregistrable, il faut qu'il existe un « contraste », c'est-à-dire que les différentes parties soient plus ou moins réactives (transparentes ou réfléchissantes) afin que l'on puisse les discriminer [5]. Certains objets émettent euxmêmes un rayonnement THz à température ambiante, dont l'intensité est proportionnelle à leur absorption. Le milieu environnant doit, bien entendu, être transparent pour que le rayonnement issu de l'objet atteigne le détecteur. Il convient donc dans un premier temps de décrire l'interaction entre une onde électromagnétique THz et la matière, afin de comprendre pourquoi un maté-riau est plus ou moins opaque, réfléchissant ou émissif dans ce domaine spectral. Ce dernier s'étend typiquement entre 0,1 et 10 THz correspondant à des longueurs d'onde de 30 μm à 3 mm (Figure 1). L'énergie des photons (entre 0,4 et 40 meV) est trop faible pour interagir avec les transitions entre états électroniques des atomes ou molécules (~ 1 eV) ou avec les énergies de vibration

Abstract. Chemical imaging techniques are beneficial for control of tablet coating layer quality as they provide spectral and spatial information and allow characterization of various types of coating defects. The purpose of this study was to assess the applicability of multispectral UV imaging for assessment of the coating layer quality of tablets. UV images were used to detect, characterize, and localize coating layer defects such as chipped parts, inhomogeneities, and cracks, as well as to evaluate the coating surface texture. Acetylsalicylic acid tablets were prepared on a rotary tablet press and coated with a polyvinyl alcohol-polyethylene glycol graft copolymer using a pan coater. It was demonstrated that the coating intactness can be assessed accurately and fast by UV imaging. The different types of coating defects could be differentiated and localized based on multivariate image analysis and Soft Independent Modeling by Class Analogy applied to the UV images. Tablets with inhomogeneous texture of the coating could be identified and distinguished from those with a homogeneous surface texture. Consequently, UV imaging was shown to be well-suited for monitoring of the tablet coating layer quality. UV imaging is a promising technique for fast quality control of the tablet coating because of the high data acquisition speed and its nondestructive analytical nature.
