Analysis of SSIM based Quality Assessment across Color Channels of Images

Abstract: Advances in imaging and computing hardware have led to an explosion in the use of color images in image processing, graphics and computer vision applications across various domains such as medical imaging, satellite imagery, document analysis and biometrics to name a few. However, these images are subjected to a wide variety of distortions during its acquisition, subsequent compression, transmission, processing and then reproduction, which degrade their visual quality. Hence objective quality assessment of col… Show more

“…In precision electronic FICS defect detection, FICS images require strict line-width and line distance, so the Edge Preserving Index (EPI) is used as the third quality assessment indicator. SSIM [36][37][38] measures the similarity between two images and belongs to the objective evaluation of the image. SSIM uses the mean, standard deviation and variance as estimates of brightness, contrast and structural similarity, respectively.…”

“…Structural similarity (SSIM) [31], [32], peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) [29], [30] and mean squared error (MSE) are generally used as objective quality assessments of the image. In the precision electronic defect detection, since the FICS image has strict requirements on the line width and line distance, the edge-preserving index (EPI) [33], [34] is also required as the third quality evaluation standard for the de-noised image.…”
