Analysis of Social Conflicts in Poland’s Soundscape as a Challenge to Socio-Acoustics

Abstract: T he study objective was to understand th e character and location of social conflicts in P o lan d 's sound scape. T he analyses were based on a review of press and In tern et articles from th e years 2008-2015 and reports on noise, preceded by a review of th e legal fram ework of protection against noise in Poland. Q uestionnaire surveys concerning P o lan d 's n ational parks and h ealth resorts and th e city of L ublin were an additional source of inform ation. “…Influenced by physical, environmental, and social factors, sounds interact and interfere with the connections of listeners and context (Truax, 1996). Sound connects with the quality of life in a place (Bernat, 2016;Bogusz et al, 2011;Hojan et al, 2012). Although sound is an invisible element, it is perceived by the users of the space unconsciously (Nowicka, 2020).…”

“…It links with the quality of life within a space. [1][2][3] Soundscape is a newly emerging research field first presented in the 1970s by Murray Schafer. He claimed that the term soundscape, in other words, acoustic landscape, is a blend of the physical environment regarding acoustical experiential qualities of sound and social environment that is reflected in the user's perception.…”

“…Shafer defines the urban soundscape as a complex sonic environment which testifies to high levels of social and cultural development (Schafer, 1977;Raimbault and Dubois, 2005). The type and location of social conflicts in the soundscape have to be identified in noise analyses (Bernat, 2016). According to research, the perception of a landscape engages other senses than sight (Liu et al, 2013;Ohrstrom et al, 2006).…”
