Analysis of selected factors influencing seroma formation in breast cancer patients undergoing mastectomy

Abstract: IntroductionThe aim of the work was to analyze the impact of selected factors on the incidence of seroma formation in breast cancer patients undergoing mastectomy.Material and methodsOne hundred and fifty breast cancer patients were prospectively enrolled in the study. All patients had mastectomy performed using the same operative technique with electrocoagulation. The amount of seroma formed after surgery and its duration were correlated with selected demographic, clinical and pathological parameters.ResultsT… Show more

“…Similar conclusions were drawn by Sforza et al (39). Other studies have shown a correlation (1,20). According to our analyses, comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus or arterial hypertension appear to be unrelated to an increased rate of postoperative seroma formation.…”

“…This seems to be due to the direct causality between resected volume and dead space. Similar findings were obtained by Zielinski et al in a prospective study (20). Baker et al could not establish a correlation between weight of the resected tissue and seroma formation (9).…”

“…Similar observation was reported by another study form Poland. 18 Tumour size had a directly proportional relationship to the incidence of seroma formation in our study. Nodal metastasis was associated with higher incidence of seroma formation 38.46% compared to 28.57% when there was no metastasis.…”

“…26,27 The etiology is multifactorial involving the lymphatic and vascular channels disruption, concurrent nodal dissection, shearing effects of the subcutaneous tissue on the underlying muscle, dead space, and mediators of inflammation and infection. 28 LD flap was harvested without additional subcutaneous tissue. The Scarpa's fascia was left intact to the margin of the donor area defect to preserve the blood supply offering excellent strong tissues for tension-free donor-site closure.…”
