Abstract:Here we focus on the biogenesis and function of messenger RNA (mRNA) in fission yeast cells. Following a general introduction that also briefly touches on other classes of RNA, we provide an overview of methods used to analyze mRNAs throughout their life cycles.
“…Although no alternative splicing has yet been observed in fission yeast, because of the high number of genes that contain introns, and the presence of genes encoding splicing factors such as SR-like proteins, it is possible that alternative splicing could occur in S. pombe (Awan et al 2013;Bitton et al 2014). For an overview of methods used to analyze mRNAs, including methods to investigate splicing, see Introduction: Analysis of RNA Metabolism in Fission Yeast (Wise and Nielsen 2016).…”
Here, we briefly outline the history of fission yeast, its life cycle, and aspects of its biology that make it a useful model organism for studying problems of eukaryotic molecular and cell biology.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
