Analysis of risk factors for recurrence after curative resection of well‐differentiated pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors based on the new grading classification

Abstract: This study confirmed the prognostic relevance of the new grading classification and that evaluation of perineural invasion and histological grade should be considered as prognostic predictors in well-differentiated PNETs (NET G1 and G2).

“…These results are consistent with those of other published series [8, 10, 29, 30] as well as with the current recommendations of the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society [16]. However, most of these studies aimed to retrospectively analyze prognostic predictors and define the best treatment strategy for pan-NENs, with overall survival as the primary endpoint [8, 10, 31, 32].…”

“…In 2010, the World Health Organization (WHO) categorized PNETs into G1 and G2 PNETs and neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC), based on mitotic counts and the Ki-67 index (4). These classifications are useful for predicting prognosis and postoperative recurrence (5,6). However, certain patients with low-risk pathologic features may unexpectedly experience distant metastasis and postsurgical recurrence (5).…”

“…Prognosis is excellent in these patients. Overall survival and curation rates are often near 100% after enucleation or (partial) pancreatectomy, higher than most series on non-functioning pNETs (Tsutsumi et al 2013, Mehrabi et al 2014. Once metastasized, insulinomas form a unique clinical challenge.…”
