Analysis of Reduction Potential of Primary Air Pollutant Emissions from Coking Industry in China

Abstract: Air pollutant emissions from the coking industry in China, the world's largest coke producer, are a major societal concern. This study employed a bottom-up emission-factor methodology to estimate the country's coking-industry airpollutant emissions. Total suspended particulate matter (TSP), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 µm (PM 2.5 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carbon mon… Show more

“…The detailed measures targeting SO 2 abatement included enforcing desulfurization in coal-fired power plants, restricting emission standards, improving fuel equipment, adjusting the energy consumption structure, reforming urban villages, switching from residential coal to cleaner fuels, promoting centralized heating system, removing small boilers, and eliminating small coking industries or reconstructing to large mechanized coke plants etc. [48][49][50][51].As a result, the concentration of SO 2 in the atmosphere was decreasing prominently nationwide. However, NO 2 pollution become increasingly prominent due to the lack of effective control policy and technology, as well as the drastic expansion of the public transportation system and vehicle numbers.…”

“…Relevant data show that the input of mercury in coking coal accounts for 35%-46% of the national total. At the same time, some polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) are synthesized by chlorine and benzene series in the boiler and are emitted with the flue gas [3]. Current technologies such as carbon-based material adsorption technology, thermal catalytic oxidation technology, photocatalytic oxidation, wet scrubbing and nonthermal plasma (NTP) enable the effective removal of multiple pollutants [4][5][6][7].…”
