Analysis of Rare Earth Elements in Geologic Samples using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry; US DOE Topical Report - DOE/NETL-2016/1794

Abstract: Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is used to measure the concentrations of rare earth elements (REE) in certified standard reference materials including shale and coal. The instrument used in this study is a Perkin Elmer Nexion 300D ICP-MS. The goal of the study is to identify sample preparation and operating conditions that optimized recovery of each element of concern. Additionally, the precision and accuracy of the technique are summarized and the drawbacks and limitations of the method … Show more

“…. The precision and accuracy of the ICP-MS technique and the drawbacks and limitation of this method were discussed elsewhere [24]. Based on duplicate sample measurements precision can be generalized as less than 10% relative standard deviation for most major elements and metals and less than 5% for rare earth elements except Sc.…”

“…Detailed experimental procedures can be found in a recent DOE topical report (Bank et al . ). A Nexion 300D quadrupole ICP‐MS (PerkinElmer) with universal cell technology was used for bulk elemental determination of the samples.…”

“…This method was optimised for the recovery of rare earth elements in a matrix of high total dissolved solids and high Li and B from the fusion procedure (Bank et al . ). KED mode was employed to lower the total dissolved solids but was not needed to remove interferences related to REE determination, except for Sc.…”

“…The workhorse analytical method used in this study was inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The ICP-MS method has been described in detail by Bank et al [27], and has become the standard method for determination of the abundance of REE in coal and coal-related samples. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS) was used to provide magnified images and point chemical composition.…”
