Analysis of prognostic factors in peripheral T-cell lymphoma: prognostic value of serum albumin and mediastinal lymphadenopathy

Abstract: We evaluated multiple patient characteristics for their prognostic significance in patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma [AITL; n = 31] and peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise unspecified [PTCL-NOS; n = 37]). Five-year overall survival (OS) rates in AITL and PTCL-NOS were 49% and 45%, respectively (p = 0.89). Cox proportional hazard model revealed that male sex, hemoglobin <10.0 g/dL and performance status (PS) > or =2 were independently associated with shorter OS i… Show more

“…It is not surprising that patients given chemotherapy were significantly younger than those who were not. When patients with unfavorable CUP presented with hypoalbuminemia, it was an indication of poor nutritional status, cachexia, and ongoing weight loss, and thus, discouraged the physician to administer chemotherapy [23-25]. LDH is commonly elevated in patients with actively proliferating tumor masses and is related to the tumor burden itself [26].…”

“…Serum albumin levels have been regarded as an important prognostic factor in patients with HL [27], as well as in some other subtypes of lymphoma [28,29]. Low serum albumin was also recently shown to be associated with shorter OS in patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise unspecified (PTCL-NOS) [30]. PMLBCL has been identified as a distinctive subtype of DLBCL, but immuno-phenotyping and gene expression profiling strongly support for a relationship between PMLBCL and HL [6][7][8].…”
