Recently, environmental preservation and the back-to-nature approach to living have become a great lifestyle. The conditions for making organic rice have received a significant amount of attention in the rice market. The study of production efficiency will become substantial to the improvement of organic rice farming to fulfill rice demand. This study investigates the relevant variables which affect the production efficiency of organic rice. The Sumber Ngepoh is one of the largest districts in the rice-producing province of Indonesia. The production stochastic frontier function and the cost stochastic dual frontier is utilized to analyze the data. The technical, economic and allocative efficiency is analyzed to determine the significant variables. Moreover, the socioeconomic variables are also investigated. The averages of the technical, allocative and economic efficiencies are 54.3%, 52%, and 31.3%, respectively, which are categorized as inefficient production. The averages indicate that organic rice farming in the Sumber Ngepoh District is not optimal and needs to be optimized. The results show that land, seed, organic fertilizer, organic pesticide, and hand tractor variables have a significant effect on organic rice production. The socioeconomic variables which significantly affect all efficiency levels are farm size, experience, and family member.

This study examined the economic viability of okra (production in Ika South and North East Local Government Areas of Delta State. The specific objectives of the study were to describe the socioeconomic characteristics of the okra farmers, assess the profitability and viability of okra production and identify the constraints faced by okra farmers in the study area. Data were obtained from 113 okra farmers selected using multi-stage sampling procedure through the use of structured questionnaire and interview schedules. Data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics and budgetary technique. Results showed that 51.3% of the okra farmers were females and 90.3% were married with a mean age of 47 years and mean farming experience of 20 years. The average household size was 5 persons while the mean farm size was 2.03 hectares. The total revenue of the okra farmers was ₦235,642.161/ha while the total variable cost was ₦76,022.24/hagiving a gross margin of ₦159,619.92/ha. The total fixed cost was ₦2,735.11/ha resulting in a net return of ₦156,884.81/ha. The benefit-cost ratio of 2.99 and return on investment of 2.03 indicating that okra production in the study area was viable and profitable. The major problems identified by the okra farmers were difficulty getting funds, bad access roads to farms, difficulty in controlling weeds and pests and diseases. The study concluded that okra farming is profitable in the study area and as such efforts should be made by government to encourage farmers to invest in okra production and young people should be encourage into okra production in the study area.

Understanding the Allocative Efficiency of Cassava Farms in Imo State, Nigeria

In Nigeria and particularly in Imo State, cassava is one of the mostly cultivated and useful root crop. These crop not only contribute to the share of agriculture in national economy, but possess a great potential and comparative advantage to compete in the liberalized economy. Despite all these potentials of cassava, empirical studies on the allocative efficiencies of cassava farmers in Imo State, have not been fully and systematically documented. On the other hand, most empirical studies on cassava have focused mainly on participation and level of adoption of cassava improved technologies. It is on this backdrop that the study was undertaken. Specifically, the study described the socioeconomic characteristics of cassava farmers in the study area and allocative efficiency of cassava farmers in the study area and Multistage random sampling technique was used in the selection of respondents. Sample size comprised ninety (90) cassava farmers. Well structured questionnaire was the main tool for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools, and stochastic frontier production model and cost function. Result show that the mean age was 47.00 years. Greater proportions (73.33%) were female. Majority (76.67%) were married with an average household size of 6 persons. The mean educational level and farming experience were secondary and 28years respectively. Average farm size and annual farm income were 1.42ha and N500,500.00 respectively. Reasonable proportions (81.11%) were members of cooperative society. The estimated gamma (γ) parameter of stochastic frontier production function showed that about 82.7% variation in output among cassava farmers in the study area was due to differences in relative efficiency. The return to scale (RtS) was 0.549 in the study area. This indicates a positive decreasing return to scale and that cassava production was in stage II of the production region where resources and production were believed to be efficient. The mean allocative efficiency was 0.860. The policy implication of these findings is that cassava farmers in the study area were efficient in allocating their resources considering their scope of operation and the limited resources. Result also showed that education, membership of cooperative, extension contact, farming experience and household size were farmers socioeconomic characteristics that have a significant influence on their relative efficiencies. Hence, the second hypothesis was rejected. It was recommended that farmers particularly on their own should judiciously pool productive resources together through strengthened and stable cooperative society group as this would enhance their relative efficiencies in cassava production positively in the area. Moreover, effective agricultural policies and programmes should focus on granting farmers improved access to farm credit as these would enable them increase their production efficiencies positively in the area.
