Transport choices are not merely practical decisions but steeped in cultural and societal perceptions. Understanding these latent drivers of behaviour will allow countries to develop and import policies to more successfully promote sustainable transport. Transport symbolism-what people believe their ownership or use of a mode connotes to others about their societal positionhas been shown to be one such, non-trivial, hidden motivator. In the case of hybrid and electric cars ('eco cars'), studies have demonstrated how their symbolic value varies within a society among different social groups. As yet, however, there has been scant research into comparing how the symbolism of a mode varies across national cultures, horizontally, between individuals with similar socio-demographic characteristics. Through qualitative thematic analysis, this study utilises two of Hofstede's cross-cultural indices-power differential and individualism versus collectivism-to develop and strengthen theory on how the differing symbolism of eco cars currently varies between four cultural clusters-Anglo, Nordic, Confucian and South Asian. It also deliberates how observed symbolic qualitative differences may influence an individual or group choice to procure eco cars. Finally, it discusses how policy development, transfer and marketing, within the context of eco cars, may need to be modified by national governments, in the Confucian and South Asian cultures, so as to encourage uptake and modal shift.

A recent turbulence in the oil market, as well as the ever-decreasing stocks of fossil fuels, has led to growth of interest in various alternative technologies like automotive hybrid vehicles. Despite the rapid increase of markets of hybrid-electric vehicles, their scope for the Gulf Corporation Council region still needs to be explored further. Awareness about benefits of using hybrid-electric vehicles is fast spreading in the Gulf Corporation Council region and this has positive impacts both in terms of consumer satisfaction and reduction of environmental pollutants. The major aim of presented work is to explore the benefits of using hybrid vehicle technology in terms of savings in cost and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions savings were found to be in a range of 9–13%. Fuel savings per 100 km were in a range of 8–10 L. The presented work discusses various issues related to background, features, and components of hybrid vehicles. Trends in the design, energy management, component sizing, energy costs, greenhouse emissions, fuel economy, and performance of these vehicles have been analyzed. Further conclusions and recommendations have been made about these issues keeping in focus market trends in the Gulf Corporation Council region.

In this study, the pressure loss value of air intake hose of FIAT 1.3 E6D type engine, located between intercooler and inlet manifold of the engine, was examined using computational fluid dynamics, considering geometrical deformation in a rubber material. The rubber material modelling was performed by the verification of the data-obtained through the experimental method-with ANSYS software using Mooney-Rivlin method. The rubber material modelling was performed with the aim of correctly determination of the increase in the hose diameter when subjected to pressure, since the material has the feature of elasticity. In this study, ANSYS Fluent v.18.0 software and a static pressure machine were used. The air intake into the hose took place at the pressure of 123,5 kPa and flow rate of 0,087 kg/s. A solution, independent of the number of element, was obtained in the analysis. The turbulence model used in the study is standard k-ε type. As a result, the deformation-oriented pressure loss in the last geometry was found 1,85 kPa. The analyses were repeated for non-deformed geometry, and a pressure loss of 2,04 kPa was determined. At the result of the test, the geometry was seen to become actually deformed, and the pressure loss was found 1,9 kPa. The lowness of pressure loss in the deformed geometry was seen as the removal of the sharp bends that would cause local losses with the effect of pressure forces. In this study, it was determined that geometrical deformation changes the geometrical features that causes pressure loss, and leads to less pressure loss.
