Prestressed concrete cylindrical pipe (PCCP) has been widely used for the distribution of water in communal, industrial, and agricultural systems for a long time. However, as it deteriorates, structural failures have been experienced. Replacing the entire existing PCCP with partial damages is not an economical method. Currently, as a cost effective repairing method, a new approach using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) has been applied. A new design procedure of this method was proposed considering various kinds of loading condition. However, it is not easy to apply this method for design purpose due to its complex procedures. The objective of this study is to provide a new design criteria and process for PCCP rehabilitation with FRP. Through this method, the appropriate quantities of FRP layers will be decided after examining of limit states of deteriorated PCCP. For this purpose, two deterioration conditions are assumed; fully deteriorated and partially deteriorated. Different limit states for each case are applied to decide the quantities of attached FRP. The concept of ''margin of safety'' is used to judge whether the design results are within the optimal ranges to satisfy all limit states.

Prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) is widely used for long-distance water pipelines throughout the world. However, prestressing wire breakage is the most common form of PCCP damage. For some pipelines that cannot be shut down, a new technique for in-service PCCP repair by externally bonding the pipe with layers of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) was proposed. A set of three-dimensional finite element models of the repaired PCCP have been proposed and implemented in the ABAQUS software, which took into account the soil pressure, the weight of the PCCP, the weight of the water, and the hydrostatic pressure. The stress–strain features of the PCCP repaired with CFRP of various thicknesses were analyzed. The stress–strain features of different wire breakage rates for the repaired PCCP were also analyzed. The results showed that the strains and stresses decreased at the springline if the PCCP was repaired with CFRP, which improved the operation of the PCCP. It has been found that the wire breakage rates had a significant effect on the strains and stresses of each PCCP component, but CFRP failed to reach its potential tensile strength when other materials were broken.

This paper presents the assessment of an existing prestressed concrete pipe on which severe damages were observed. The pipe was constructed with high strength concrete and it was externally prestressed with high strength steel. Material properties of all materials were experimentally defined. The numerical investigation was carried out in commercially available FE software ABAQUS. A 3D finite element model was developed for the pipe wherein the material properties as measured were used. After the investigation of the control specimen, the prestressed pipe was numerically strengthened utilizing composite materials. (CFRP) Two sets of CFRP sheets (2 layer and 4 Layer) were considered for the analysis. The results obtained from the strengthened pipe were compared with the controlled prestressed pipe. Results are presented for simply supported boundary conditions for the pipe. The deformation, strain and stress distribution across the pipe has also been analyzed and discussed for all numerical models.
