About 26% of global CO2 emissions came from coal-fired power plants (CP) in 2021. Furthermore, 72% of this came from Asian countries, especially China and India. Therefore, reducing CO2 emission from CPs is a must if Asian countries were to achieve net-zero CO2 emission by 2050 or soon afterward. In this study, we evaluate the potential contribution of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to decarbonize CPs in selected Asian countries. Our study area consists of the east coast of China, India, Sumatra, West Java and Kalimantan of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, and Thailand which contains one-quarter of the global CP capacity. We screen all existing CPs in the study area for CCS retrofit readiness, considering the size and age of CPs, the CO2 transportation distance, and the storage capacity of nearby oil and gas reservoirs and saline aquifers. Analyses show that out of 520 CPs in the study area, 305 (59%) pass the screening criteria for CCS-retrofitting. If fully implemented at a 90% CO2 capture rate, CCS retrofitting will result in the abatement of 1.55 Gtpa of CO2, equal to 65% of CO2 emission from CPs in the study area and 16% of global CO2 emission from CPs. Furthermore, retrofitting CPs with CCS has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 18% for Malaysia, 26% for India, and 26% for Vietnam. However, the biggest CO2 abatement will be realized in India (715 Mtpa) and China (636 Mtpa). These results quantify the potential contribution of CCS in decarbonizing CPs in Asia. Policy implications to accelerate CCS implementation based on our findings are also discussed.

Biomass cook stove is one of the conventional methodsof cooking in rural households and industries. Typical stove designs presume inefficient combustion processes along with harmful emissions. Subsequently a more efficient design of biomass cook stove has been a foremost research interest for scientists during the last decades. The study focused on enhancing thecombustion process altering the key parameters of a biomass cook stove i.e. height of the chimney and the air intake port opening. From the study, it is found that height of the chimney and the air intake port opening is very influential on the performance characteristics of the biomass cook stove. For estimating the comprehensive performance of the improved biomass stove water boiling test (WBT) was carried outfor varied chimney heights (95 cm, 80 cm, 65 cm & 50 cm) &varied air intake port opening (40%, 60%, 80% & 100 %). At chimney height of 80 cm & fully air intake port opening, optimum thermal efficiency has been found to be 33.76%, 33.79%, respectively. The highest concentration of CO was identified around 23 ppm during the 40% opening of the air intake port and it minimized to 9 ppm as the air intake port opened fully. Both the values for CO2/CO and indoor air quality were within acceptable limits.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is considered to be an effective method to mitigate anthropogenic carbon emissions that have been the major cause of global warming. One of the possible sites to store CO 2 is in geothermal reservoirs. In this study, an attempt to simulate CO 2-brine reservoir rock interaction inside a geothermal reservoir is carried out using the PHREEQC program. The study utilizes published rock mineralogy of the assumed reservoir lithology and chemistry of the hot water in the Ungaran geothermal field, Java, Indonesia. The simulation is based on equilibrium and kinetic modeling and assumes a single stage CO 2 injection kept at a constant temperature and pressure. The amount of injected CO 2 is determined by solubility modeling of CO 2 in hot water under estimated reservoir conditions. The modeling predicted (i) the effect of solubility trapping at early stages of CO 2-brine rock interaction, (ii) dissolution of Ca-bearing silicates (plagioclases) coupled with calcite precipitation as a potential chemical processes relevant to a possible CO 2 mineralization, (iii) progressive transition from solubility to mineral trapping becoming significant after 30 days following injection, (iv) minor porosity increase (∼0.5%), and (v) achievement of equilibrium between CO 2-brine-rock in 10 years after injection. Sensitivity analysis associated with the uncertainties for altering mineral proportion and rock porosity reveal no significant change in the ability of the modeled reservoir to trap injected CO 2 into mineral phases. Concerning the CCS studies so far carried out in geothermal fields in volcanic reservoirs, this modeling comprises one of the first performed for fields with intermediate volcanics. The result from this study can be utilized as foreknowledge for possible future CCS operations in Indonesian geothermal fields.
