Analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls by quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry: Part I - Chemical ionization studies of co-eluting congeners 77 and 110

Abstract: A quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer coupled with a gas chromatograph was used to study the reactions of two co-eluting polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds, congener 77 (3,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl) and congener 110 (2,3,3′,4′,6-pentachlorobiphenyl), with a variety of reagent cations. Analysis of these co-eluting PCB congeners illustrates the analytical challenges of determining concentrations of a toxic "co-planar" congener (77) in the presence of a co-eluting congener (110), which is less toxic tha… Show more

“…However, other studies show that charge exchange is the dominant process observed using isobutane with some compounds such as polychlorinated biphenyls. 30 Fales et al showed strong differences between the mass spectra resulting from ionization of sulfur S 8 with methane, isobutane, ammonia and water. 31 Methane produces an abundant MH + ion and numerous fragment ions derived from the (M + C 2 H 5 ) + adduct ion.…”

“…69 Congener 77, which is highly toxic, is a non-ortho compound in that the molecule is not chlorine-substituted in the ortho positions vicinal to the phenyl-phenyl bond. On the other hand, congener 110 is a mono-ortho compound and is much less toxic.…”

“…Despite the fact that PCBs have been routinely analyzed by mass spectrometric techniques, including quadrupole ion trap analyzers, systematic studies focused on the PCB mass spectral fragmentation are very limited. The earliest overview on PCB fragmentation in a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer is reported in the pioneering works of March and coworkers …”
