Analysis of photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics of different strains of Porphyra yezoensis

Abstract: The levels of photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence of Porphyra yezoensis strains selected from high-light environments were investigated. Sutong and Sulian strains originated from the same high-light environment but were selected from different sites on the Yellow Sea coast of Jiangsu Province, China. In January (a low temperature period), the Sulian strain and the WT (a widely cultivated strain) had higher levels of chlorophyll a, phycoerythrin, phycocyanin, and allophycocyanin, and higher act… Show more

“…Because relatively high photosynthetic physiological activity may accelerate the growth of the thallus, the study of the photosynthetic physiological characteristics of Pyropia strains is also important for the breeding of Pyropia (Zhang et al 2012(Zhang et al , 2014. From the perspective of breeding, it is important to breed a cultivar with high light-use efficiency.…”

“…Although there are many methods for seaweed breeding, mutagenesis remains the main breeding method. Some cultivars possessing good characteristics have been obtained through mutagenesis (Zhang et al 2012). Niwa et al (2011) selected a pigment mutant of P. yezoensis by heavy-ion beam mutagenesis that had higher contents of total FAA, Ala, and Tau than the wild type, and their study provided a good basis for Pyropia pigment mutant breeding.…”
