Analysis of paint traces to determine the ship responsible for a collision

Abstract: Although there have been many instances of ship collision at sea in recent times, not much research has been conducted on the topic. In this study, paint from an actual site of ship collision was collected and analyzed as evidence. The amount of evidence collected from the ships involved in the collision is either small or has inconsistent morphology. In addition, the contaminants and samples are often mixed in this evidence, making its analysis difficult. Paint traces of the damaged ship and the ship suspecte… Show more

“…One of the microplastics found was identified as an acrylic or alkyd chip with evidence of kaolin and styrene. Such polymers and additives are commonly used for car (Yang et al, 2012) and ship paints (Lee et al, 2021). Hence, the microplastic chip that was found in the intestine of one harbour porpoise originating from the NS could have derived from abraded ship paint.…”

“…The band at 872 cm –1 indicated the C–O out of plane bending. The band at 700 cm –1 confirmed a monosubstituted benzene ring . Interestingly, the depth where the paint particle was present had the highest MP concentration (30 m Jan. 2020), reaching 491 n L –1 MP (Figure b–c).…”

“…The band at 700 cm −1 confirmed a monosubstituted benzene ring. 45 Interestingly, the To confirm the causal relationship among all of the variables including MP, ships, and nutrients, we applied the partial leastsquares path modeling (PLS-PM). 20 Cause−effect relationships were established between three latent variables (LVs) in the inner model and 10 manifest variables (MVs) in the outer model (Figure 5c).…”

“…Lee et al presented a case report investigating three maritime collisions. After a forensic examination of paint residues recovered from the ship of interest, the other vessel(s) involved in two of the three collisions were identified [ 62 ]. The samples were taken from various collision sites (e.g., the deck, guardrails, port-side, starboard) and from 2 to 3 suspected ships per case.…”
