Analysis of Open Space Types in Urban Centers Based on Functional Features

Abstract: The open space in urban centers is not only the element to beautify the landscape of urban public centers, but also bears multiple functional needs and reflects cultural values. Based on the classification system of the open space in urban centers, this paper sorts out the concept of the open space of urban centers, analyzes the evolution mode of its scale and shape, explores the way of cultivation and construction, and then puts forward a number of planning points for reasonable planning and to protect the op… Show more

“…In addition, the study proves that the GreenPS backbone must have continuous spatial structure in the city layout. In ecological terms, this should ensure the "town-nature" system, which means creating conditions for the harmonious inclusion of the city in natural biogeocenosis and responses to climate change challenges, not to mention such well-studied aspects, that the continuity of green city places positively enhances the use of GreenPS, promotes sustainable mobility and benefits people's wellbeing [39,40].…”

“…GreenPS density in urban fabrics is also critical to reduce the use of private motorized vehicles and enable quality of city life and sustainability [37]. A variety of ways of measuring different kinds of urban densities have been central to numerous theories relating to urban form to city life, resulting also with an integrative approach towards conceptualizing urban density within a framework of assemblage theory [40]. Giving credit to all studies and attempts, in this work we apply the most common way of density measure, expressed as a percentage: the ratio of total city GreenPS space to city residential area [8]:…”

“…Open space, on the one hand, refers to a space that is relatively open, less closed, and has more limited space, and on the other hand, refers to a space opened by the masses to the majority of people. This refers not only to landscapes, such as parks and green spaces but also to streets, squares, alleys, and courtyards [11].…”

“…This increase has reduced private recreational spaces and increased the reliability on POS for recreation. Apart from these, today's cities have diverse functional needs from open spaces [21,22]. Therefore, a "one size fit all" would be prone to failure in such high-density areas.…”
