Analysis of off-flavors in the aquatic environment by stir bar sorptive extraction–thermal desorption–capillary GC/MS/olfactometry

Abstract: The off-flavor compounds 2-methylisoborneol (MIB), geosmin, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, 2,3,6-trichloroanisole, 2,3,4-trichloroanisole, and 2,4,6-tribromoanisole were analyzed in water samples by stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) followed by on-line thermal desorption (TD) capillary GC/MS. Quantification was performed using the MS in the single-ion-monitoring mode (SIM) with 2,4,6-trichloroanisole-D(5 )as internal standard. Quantification limits are 0.1-0.2 ng L(-1) for the haloanisoles, 0.5 ng L(-1) for geosmin… Show more

“…Regarding the extraction of 2-MIB and GSM from water samples, various extraction methods in the analysis include closed loop stripping analysis [11], solvent (liquid-liquid) extraction [12,13], or micro extraction [5], solid phase micro extraction with headspace [14], stir bar sorptive extraction [15] and solid phase extraction [16]. Some of these are time-consuming, labor-intensive, are complex for sample preparation or analysis or have poor sensitivity.…”

“…A SPME-GC/MS method has been recently employed to identify chlorobromoanisoles at detection levels ranging from 0.03 ng l -1 (for 2,4,6-trichloroanisole) to 0.25 ng l -1 (for 2,3-dibromo-6-chloroanisole) in treated waters and distribution reservoirs (Diaz et al, 2005b). Another solventless technique, stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSA), has been successfully applied to the analysis of trichloro-and tribromoanisoles at ng l -1 levels (Ochiai et al, 2001;Benanou et al, 2003).…”

“…Quando a dessorção térmica simultânea de barras SBSE é empregada, o valor β, assim como o tempo de extração, não aumenta e a recuperação não diminui. 22 Segundo Benanou e colaboradores, 24 a barra PDMS após a extração pode ser armazenada por uma semana (4 °C), sem perda significativa do analito, ampliando uma nova perspectiva para a extração e amostragem in loco.…”
