Analysis of Nonlinear Fiber Kerr Effects for Arbitrary Modulation Formats

Abstract: Coherent optical transmission systems can be modeled as a four-dimensional (4D) signal space resulting from the two polarization states, each with two quadratures. Recently, nonlinear analytical models have been proposed capable of capturing the impact of Kerr nonlinearity on 4D constellations. None of these addresses the inter-channel nonlinear interference (NLI) imposed by arbitrary modulation formats in multi-channel wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems. In this paper, we introduce a general nonlin… Show more

“…The SMF affects optical pulse propagation by its both linear and nonlinear effects [3], [4]. In ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission system, the nonlinear interchannel stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and Kerr effect are the major limits of transmission data rates in optical communication systems [5], [6], and [7]. Note that although the channel power is low in optical communication system, the total power due to multichannel in WDM system is relatively large which makes the nonlinear fiber optics more effective in determining the system performance.…”

“…The model in [33] can be used for low dispersion fiber but still makes the assumption of 4D symmetric constellations. Recently, based on [32], a model for arbitrary 4D modulation formats was introduced in [34]. The model in [34] was derived in the time domain but only accounts partially for NLI effects (SCI and XPM terms only).…”

“…Recently, based on [25], a model for arbitrary 4D modulation formats was introduced in [27]. The model in [27] was derived in the time domain but only accounts partially for NLI effects (SCI and XPM terms only). The state-of-the-art NLI models for 4D modulation formats are summarized in the second part of Table I.…”
