NOx, NO and NO2 concentrations, and meteorological parameters, temperature, wind speed, relative humidity and pressure were measured simultaneously and continuously in Dhahran (Saudi Arabia) during three months in summertime. The hourly and daily NOx, NO and NO2 average concentrations were investigated as a function of the meteorological parameters. NOx, NO, and NO2 were found to have a common source and to be highly influenced by traffic emission and meteorological conditions, and the trend of NO showed a higher concentration during weekdays than weekends. NOx has significant positive correlation coefficients with NO and NO2, respectively. Similarly, NO2 also has a positive correlation coefficient with NO. The temperature and wind speed showed negative correlation coefficients while relative humidity showed positive correlation coefficient with NOx, NO and NO2. On the other hand, NO2 was found to exceed international air quality standards, which indicates the existence of a possible NO2 air pollution problem in Dhahran.

1, antonio.moreno@uam.es 2 RESUMEN La calidad del aire está determinada por un alto número de componentes cuya presencia e interacciones en ámbitos como las ciudades resultan de singular trascendencia para la vida humana. En este artículo se pretende estudiar dos conocidos contaminantes, el dióxido de nitrógeno y el ozono troposférico, con el objetivo de explorar y desvelar la forma e intensidad de la hipotética relación entre ambos cuando se analiza espacialmente. A tal fin, dada la limitación de la información disponible, se ha adoptado un doble enfoque: analizar, por un lado, los datos registrados en las estaciones de superficie y, por otro, los estimados mediante interpolación espacial, una de las técnicas usuales para "conocer" dicha polución en todo el espacio urbano. Ello permite confrontar y controlar mejor los resultados mutuos. Experimentalmente se han examinado datos de tres ciudades españolas, Madrid, Barcelona y Sevilla, utilizando una pluralidad de técnicas estadísticas, gráficas y cartográficas, apoyadas en sistemas de información geográfica. Los resultados alcanzados muestran que el NO 2 y el O 3 exhiben patrones espaciales contrapuestos y que entre ambos existe una dependencia espacial, tanto en los datos observados, como en los datos estimados. No obstante, en algunos casos la forma y significación de las relaciones espaciales no ha podido quedar claramente determinada, en gran medida por el escaso número de datos observados. La coherencia de los resultados en ambas aproximaciones posibilita así un cierto optimismo a la hora de elaborar caracterizaciones y diagnósticos de la atmósfera urbana con modelos espaciales de este tipo.Palabras clave: interpolación espacial, SIG, contaminación atmosférica, dióxido de nitrógeno, ozono, Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla.

Ozone (O3) is a secondary gaseous pollutant in the urban environment, and its variation correlates well with nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2). Continuous monitoring has been done in the Campo Grande city urban area, using ozone 49C and NO-NO2-NOx 42CTL gas analyzers. The results show that the maximum concentrations of O3 and oxidant (Ox = O3 + NO2) in Campo Grande often appear in the early afternoon around 15:00 hours. The daily variation of NO concentrations shows a very clear cycle with two peaks, one appearing around 07:00 a.m. and the other at 11:00 p.m. At the lowest level, NO2 is the main component of NOx, while NO dominates the higher mixing ratio. It is also shown that the level of Ox is composed of two factors: the regional and the local contributions. The former is affected by the regional O3 level, while the latter is effectively correlated with the primary pollution level. The daily variation also appears in the concentrations of oxidant components.
