Analysis of Network Structure and Doctor Behaviors in E-Health Communities from a Social-Capital Perspective

Abstract: In tandem with internet development and widespread social media use, e-health communities have begun to emerge in recent years. These communities allow doctors to access forums anywhere, anytime, seek or exchange medical information online, find literature, and so on. This is convenient and can solve some problems for doctors while also promoting doctor communication. This study collected and collated 102 doctors in the "Lilac Forum" and used social network tools to quantify the overall network density, centra… Show more

“…However, it had an average distance (2.992) and higher information accessibility. This differs from previous research conclusions [67], which could be attributable to differences between different social media in terms of user activity and event attention. Meanwhile, we identified 18 social influencers (higher Freeman betweenness) in the information dissemination network.…”

“…The structural hole measures whether an individual is in a position of direct connection and whether the individual plays a key connecting role [67]. At the same time, individuals located in structural holes have high information control ability [68] and can obtain redundant information in the network [69].…”

“…Although there is general agreement on what social capital is, what creates it, and what it provides, its measurement has been made difficult mainly by the variety of theoretical perspectives that have not provided for the definition of concrete indicators or their operational feasibility [73,158]. In particular, contextualizing social capital from the perspective of social networks enables the observation and progressive measurement of the increase in members' resources when the capacity of access and exchange increases within the network [147,159,160]. However, their operationalization and testing have currently proved to be a maze [161], resulting in a variety of non-unified approaches.…”

“…Based on the foregoing, this article uses the research of Li and Xu (2020) and Meng et al (2018) as examples to conduct an in-depth analysis of the factors affecting the spread of EL 39,5 social network information under the theme of health/disease, as shown in Figure 8. Li and Xu (2020) used social network tools to analyse the data on the "Lilac Forum" and quantified the overall network density, centrality, core-periphery structure and structural void indicators of doctors' information exchange from the perspective of social capital. The results show that there is a core periphery structure in the network, and doctors with senior professional titles occupy structural holes and become opinion leaders.…”
