Analysis of network design for a circular production system using multi-objective mixed integer linear programming model

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a mathematical model for the design of a circular production system (CPS) for an Indian manufacturing organization participating in a symbiotic network. Design/methodology/approach A multi-objective mixed integer linear programming is used to model the network for quantifying the economic benefits. The data set collected from the case organization is used. The GAMS optimization package is used to simulate the model. Findings The model is able to compute the e… Show more

“…Regarding the methodological choices, multicriteria methods were used, such as Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory-DEMATEL and ÉLimination et Choix Traduisant la REalité-ELECTRE [60,62,73]. Mathematical models were executed in [67,89]. Regression analysis [66] (Dubey et al, 2019) and structural equation modeling [75,85] were also performed.…”

“…For performance evaluation of SUIWO algorithm in solving the concerned lot-sizing problem, two methods are arranged. First, the quality of solutions generated by SUIWO in small-sized problems is compared with the optimal solutions of General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) software that has been frequently used in optimization problems (Atabaki and Aryanpur, 2018; Vimal et al , 2019). Then, the results of SUIWO in large-sized instances are compared with those obtained by a genetic algorithm (GA).…”

“…Circular production lies at the intersection of research areas such as sustainable product design, sustainable supply chains, and reverse logistics, but there is scarce information on how these concepts relate to a company's transition to circularity [31]. Circular production systems need to monitor environmental impacts and provide these as feedback to the processing stages [32,33]. Industrial symbiosis may be used to proactively exchange resources such as raw materials, agricultural harvests, wastes, energy, and water for communities of businesses in close proximity, including reverse supply chains consisting of suppliers, plants, distributors, retailers, customers, collection centers, refurbishing centers, and manufacturing so that the actions are consistent with ecological principles [33][34][35][36][37].…”
